I've been in Korea 8 years. Married to a Korean for 4 years. Been out of the teaching circuit for the past 3 years working for a company. I was thinking about teaching again because my contract is done here next month.
But a coworker just told me even F5 visa holders need to jump through all the hoops now just to work at a hakwon? Oh dear.. I'm Canadian. Where do I start..
I've got my original degree here with me. That's it. Please help. |

Ok, I've spent all afternoon reading threads and no one knows for sure. Had a Korean friend call the Korean Education office. They say F5's need notarized degree + CRC. Other people are saying it depends on the school? Others said only a local Korean police check worked for an F5.
Why aren't these rules written clearly anywhere? I'm kind of freaking out here because I'll be unemployed in a month and if I have to start sending documents to Canada I really need to know what is going on?
Can anyone help me out here? |

New changes to the MOE rules last summer now require schools (including hagwans) to provide CRCs and proof of education for all their teachers when they register them at the local MOE/POE office.

I know when I got my F-5 they did a CRC here and abroad to get it in the first place. In my opinion if they want to verify the degree they can pick up the phone just like anyone else and verify it..
I dont see why I should have to make a special trip home to get a stamp, when technically this is my home..
Just my humble opinion... |

It is an MOE/POE requirement (teacher issue) and NOT an immigration / visa issue.

All the F4 teachers at my school have never gotten a CBC. Are we all working illegally? What are the ramifications? It seems like the recruiters and schools know nothing about this new change. |

The rule, to the best of my knowledge, does not come into effect until early next year.
I think there may be a mad scramble next year when the implementation goes into effect and a lot of people are caught short.

Thanks for the info. The advantage of having an F5 suddenly doesn't seem so sweet anymore. |

Working with children isn't about "sweet" visas or any other issue outside of trying to protect the kids. Sucks that Korea has finally caught up with the times?
Of course, this CRC checking should be across the board for all teachers, regardless of nationality. If it weren't, then there would be cause for complaint. As it stands, if you work with kids, you should be checked out, locally and abroad.
FYI, I am an F5 holder as well, but no longer working with children. When I was (on an F2 at that time), I also submitted a CRC voluntarily, as it wasn't mandated at that time (many years ago) and I was in a somewhat remote location on a private contract where such matters were not considered. However, knowing that I would have to do this back in my own country, I got both done from here as well. It was easy (and a big gesture at the time), so I am glad I did. |

Having the advantage of an F visa should give the visa holder some security that applying for new jobs should become easier, not more difficult.
This "protect the children" spiel is BS. When Korean teachers rape students and aren't punished, I don't see the reason why Johnnie English has to fly to his home country yearly if he hasn't done anything wrong. |

The Law is planned to be enforced in Febr next year, but MoE is jumping on it to get the people who will be working after febr to already follow the guidelines.
Good luck |

Look, I've taught for 5 years in this country and lived here for 8. It is legally my permanent residence. It's a bit late for them to tell me the bar fight I got in when I was 19 is suddenly going to keep me from getting a job in my country of permanent residence. Don't you think? Should I just laugh it off and pack up the family and kids and move to the other side of the planet next week?
Get real.

I posted two links in another thread which showed that three Korean teachers were fired. Two for sexually harrassing a student and one for having sex with a middle school student.
So you have any links that prove that teachers who did what you claim were NOT punished?
Or was this something you just heard on Dave's? |

And how is that any different than a US (Canada, UK, SA, NZ, AUS, Ire) citizen or permanent resident being required to have a background check (from every country they have ever lived/resided in) to work at a school in their home country / country of residence?
They move the bar around all the time. How is this situation any different?
Standards and requirements are going up. Live with it or choose another profession.
