I'm wondering where I should go after I'm done with Korea. I'm on my second contract here, but not really feeling it. Korean culture and me don't really get along that well. I know the money's in Asia and the Middle East ... but I think I'm done with Asia, and I'm not sure the Middle East would be my cup of tea. Where have other people gone, and where should I go next year? |

Mexico !! I spent 3 years there.. wages compared to cost of living are good if you have experience and get a decent job.
The sun always shines, people are friendly, nice food.
Cue everyone saying how dangerous it is but it really isnt as long as you are not near the border or Northern states. When i finish in Korea I am going back 100% !!

I lived in Mexico (Mexico City), and I can second this. It is a great place with cheap spacious housing, cheap transportation, cheap food, and good paying jobs (for those with a qualification, such as a college degree and/or a CELTA). It is also safe. I thought it would be dangerous, but it was as safe as Korea (where I was). Also, the weather = amazing! Not too hot and not too cold. In the summer, it is in the 60s and 70s (in the capital). I was never there in the winter, but I think the weather is good then as well.
Mexico = paradise (almost) |

You'll probably spend your first year establishing yourself
in Mex, but it's an interesting place. Might take a while
to save, but all about the experience..ya? |

Yeh it took me like 6 months to land a really good job in a prepa because I arrived in Feb and most start in August. Before that I worked in a language school.
Worked 12 hours per week, 3 days per week and made 15,000 Pesos per month and my rent was like 3000 Pesos all bills included in Guadalajara.
Loved the weather, food and people who are much more welcoming than here in Korea, and I miss the crazy Mexican road trips to the beach and jungle !! To be honest I cant wait to get back there
Never felt in any danger except maybe when I saw the police late at night when no one else was around, but apart from that safe as houses! |

Spain but they want proper English like the Europeans. Mexico is another destination. What about Italy?

Poland or the Czech Republic. That's where I would go if I wanted to continue teaching EFL. |

I shouldn't really be saying this, but I hate elitist obscuratanism... people want to keep this gig a secret, but why should they?
There is a small commune in Dhaka .... under a deserted train station and....
No, I can't, it's a secret for a reason.... |

Spent time working in both countries.Lovely places and bloody fascinating cultures and historical sites, but you'll have to get used to living on rolls and soup packets to survive. |

I left because I wanted to see what Korea was like for 2 years, when I left I knew I would be going back to Mexico after my 2 years here. I just thought with free flights, free apartment and decent salary I may as well see what its like here.
I do like it here in Korea but i prefer it in Mexico, mainly due to the people, weather and food. Also I think I will save more here as I have less things to spend to spend my money on, which will be a bonus when I do go back as my Won will go a long way in Mexico and I can easily survive with a part time job over there giving me more time to enjoy it !
Or I can easily just do a few private classes there which I used to do during the summer vacations, usually consisted of sitting in a coffee shop talking and correcting peoples spoken English. |

I'd love to hear more as well. I've been considering moving there to be closer to home, but not give up the expat lifestyle. I'm guessing money was the main factor in going to Korea, right? |

Yes money kind of was the main factor, if you read my post above you will see why I moved here. In Mexico I was making enough to live a very comfortable life but not really enough to save a decent amount each month. Saying that though if you are willing to work really long hours and not go out that much you can also save. I spent most of my money on travelling around other parts of Mexico during the long and frequent vacations you will get and going out quite a bit.
Another reason I left is that my wife is Mexican and she fancied a change for a year or two, I probably like it there more than her though and to be honest I cant wait to go back. Like I said before I like it here but I spend large parts of my days, whilst doing unnecessary desk warming, thinking about and comparing the two places which has made it even more obvious to me how much I miss Mexico. If you decide to go and want any advice about which cities to go and which to avoid let me know as I have been pretty much all over the country. |
