I feel that most people are language hookers. We run around all day saying and teaching what people want. Then at night we run around and do the same thing for privates. Maybe we should take coffee with us when we teach and wear short skirts.

I don't feel like a hooker.

I do what people want because they pay me to do this. I must dress professionally (shirt not skirt), I must teach English, and other than this I do it my way. If there is a specific request I do this, unless of course it falls outside the realm of teaching or teaching related.

I would rather not sell myself to this job. I would rather be in a country cottage by my fire side or on my sunny deck writing great novels, but hey....

That's a great business idea bellum. Have a foreigner visit your office with a fresh cup of coffee and a fifteen minute chat in English, 30,000 won plus tip.

Gonna go buy myself a little scooter. Very Happy

Anyone else want in?

I second phaedrus.

And add that the only way I feel like a prostitute is the high pay I get for the short hours of work. My director isn't my pimp, he's my john. And I work hard, doing it my way, to give him his money's worth.

What bugs me is people trying to befriend me...I'm never sure if they just want free english or if they're just curious about foreigners, or genuinely trying to make you feel welcome. Its developed into quite a paranoia..

It depends on who I work for and how they treat me. Some places treat their teachers as little more than language slaves. I felt pretty much like a hooker when I worked for a place like that. However, when I was treated as a professional, I felt better about myself and had a much higher opinion about my job.

I think I would feel more like a hooker if I were a used car salesman though. Laughing

How is this different from any other job? We do what someone else wants us to do and they pay us to do it. It might not be my first choice of job, but I don't exactly feel like I'm compromising my morals in any way by helping other people learn my native language.

There are far worse ways to earn a living. I should know, I've tried some of them.

The job I did before teaching English:
I had a list of pensions for the people retiring from a certain company. One of the lists was written in a font that enabled eight people to a page, the other was slightly smaller and so about ten could fit. My job was to compare the numbers on the left with the ones on the right and circle any that were different, like
555.0 being written as 5550 or something like that...
All alone
In a room with no window
Look at page one on the left, good, flip it over, compare the first two to the last two on the right, good, flip over page on the right, etc.

It was a temp company so there were lots of other jobs but all similar in skill. Another one I did was processing cheques that came in from the banks at night, some 1000 per hour. Very noisy and strangely meditative.

I must be a hooker. The kids treat me with less respect than a hooker gets, so if the glove fits..

Sometimes.

Do you get people saying "I want to be your friend" ?

And then, a few sentences later, or possibly the next day, they bring you some work to their 'friend' to proof-read ... or some other request. And after you have done it, you never hear from your new-found 'friend' again, luckily.

I have been suckered several times ...

No.

Hooker's make more (per hour) then most EFL instructors.

I bet hookers are not bothered as much when thet are in the street clothes (or non-street clothes/non-working clothes) as ELF instructors.

Hooker's probiblibly don't work split shifts.

Hooker's are actively encouraged to have sex with the clients.

Hooker's rarely deal with kindergarten and elementary school aged clients.

Hooker's only occationally have to deal with their client's parents second guessing thier curriculum.

Hooker's clients, I am sure, try harder in their sessions then EFL instructor's clients.

Hooker's clients never complain about homework being too hard.

Hooker's clents pay attention, rarely fall asleep and do not do homework from their math hakwon.

and finally ...

A Hooker's job discription is not changed every five minutes.
