Regarding the F2-99 visa, I just called 1345 and the operator told me that I won't find any information about it in hikorea.go.kr

He said that I have to go personally to the nearest immigration office to find out if I am eligible for this visa and that (somehow) I need to get a letter of recommendation from the Ministry of Justice. If I am eligible, they will give me all the information needed.

He also said that since I've been living in Korea for 13 years (first as a student and currently with E7 visa with the same employer for 8 years) I could apply for the point system, and will be more easy and less complicated than the F2-99 visa (what do you guys think?)

I've been told it's in the Korean section. Never heard of the letter of recommendation from the MOJ. You need one from someone who knows you personally.

Try for one, if you don't get it, try for the other.

Below are the current requirements.

1) 5 years on an E2 Visa. You can have had more than 1 employer during this period as long as you haven't left the country on a Visa run. I.e. transfered your E2 Visa to a new employer in Korea by means of a release letter.

2) You need a Korean to sponsor you (Preferably someone in a higher standing. Doctor, dentist, lawyer, manager of company. Normal employee could be used, but you know how status in country works!)

3) You need to write a letter in English and then get it translated into Korean. Topic "What I have done for Korea in the past and what I will do for Korea in the future." Not that difficult. Just butter it up with good facts and waffle. It must be 4 A4 pages long.

4) Any additional certificates or qualifications that you may have. Tesol certificate or Master's would be great.

5) Take a Korean with you for the application. Just in case they throw a curve ball in your direction.

6) Korean language is not a requirement, (see point 5 above.)

7) Immigration cannot make a decision on this Visa. It will get sent to the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) who will decide.

Cool You cannot have left Korea for longer than 3 months during the 5 year period. If you have, the 5 year period will be extended.

Did they do away with the income requirement?

Ive been in Korea on the same E-2 Visa for 4 years and 6 months now. Ive always transferred my visa via release letters, im still rocking my original alien registration number from 2007.

However I'm changing jobs again this year via release letter and my status will change to E-1, will this effect my chances of getting the F-2 99?

Any help is appreciated guys thanks.

I got my F2-99 Visa in February. F5 Visa in June. When I put in the application, I was specifically told by Immigration that it had to be THE SAME VISA.

If you change your Visa status, the clock will reset. The rule states 5 years on the same visa.

I would, however, check with Immigration on this ASAP. You might regret changing your visa to an E1 with just 6 months to go before you qualify for the F2-99 on your E2.

Quote from the Hikorea website.

Long-term Sojourner (F2-99)

- Foreigner that has domestic residence over 7 years of continuous stay in ROK with the status other than Diplomacy (A-1), Official Business (A-2), or Agreements (A-3) and who is accepted by the Minister of Justice
- However in case of Professor (E-1), Foreign Language Instructor (E-2), Research (E-3), Technological Guidance (E-4), Special Profession (E-5), Specially Designated Activities (E-7), Whohas domestic residence over 5 years of continuous stay in ROK with the status and who is accepted by the Minister of Justice

I was in my local immi office today & asked the woman about the F2-99. Sokcho has a tiny relaxed office. I've had nothing but easy pleasant dealings with them over the years. She'd never heard of it.

So she hunted around a bit on her computer & found it & compared my data & said it shouldnt be a problem. She gave me the generic change of status form & one other for a Korean sponsor to fill out & told me to bring them back with 50000 won. No mention of a translated explanatory letter (though I could do that easily enough).

This visa type seems to have me written all over it. I fail the point system (age/language) but I've certainly served my time -- 10 years at the same job. I could probably get the local superintendent or a bigger honcho at POE to vouch for me. Am I in?

Whats not clear to me is how a F2-99 differs from a standard F2. Renewing E2's has not been problematic for me, but what I'm thinking about is my post-retirement status here in 3 years. I wish to stay, I intend to keep teaching part-time, finding a new E2 sponsor wouldnt be a big problem, & I'm locked into receiving Korean pension now. But greater job flexibility (or even the choice of not working) would be welcome.

So I'd be stupid not to pursue this, right?

There wouldn't be any reason not to pursue it really. I'd be curious to hear how, if at all, it differs from say a points visa. I believe they get theirs for 3 years and then have to renew it.

I wonder if you could move to an F-5. did she give you any official literature on the visa at all that you could go over?

No. All she had was some screen in korean. Her english is pretty good but not up to fielding more detailed questions.

Which is why I'm asking here. Theres a real dearth of info out there on the F2-99. If you google it, this thread comes up on top & nothing else authoritative at all.

I suspect that it may be on the Korean version of the immigration website. The Korean version is kept far more up to date and in detail than the English version. If you ever compare certain pages (like say the F2 itself) between them, you'll find that the Korean version seems to have far more info on it.

I'll poke around later and see if there is a Korean version for the F2-99 there. It may actually have everything and at least there would be something official we could poke through and translate.

Does anyone know when this visa was first available?

I've had pauses in my employment here but have completed 5 years worth of contracts.

I'm thinking of contacting an English speaking lawyer who knows about immigration law who can help give me some pull and try to get grandfathered in. I'm sure there is an inclusion or loophole somewhere.

For those of us who had wished they hadn't left the country, has anyone done this and does anyone know of an English speaking Korean lawyer I could try?

ATEK has a huge list of lawyers, some of which specialise in immigration, 3 or 4 I believe.

Has anyone found any information on the F2-99 (assuming such a visa exists) in Korean or English on the HiKorea site? I can't seem to stumble across anything. Welshguy quoted a bit from that site (see above in this thread) but I can't even locate that. Can anyone provide a link to where that is stated on the HiKorea site?

Thanks!

It's there, but because of silly web design choices it's impossible to link directly to it.

If you start here:

http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/InfoDetailR_kr.pt?catSeq=186&categoryId=1&parentId=141&showMenuId=18

Click on "거주 (F-2)" (on the right side under the heading 일반 장기 체류자격)

Now this page will list all of the different types of F-2 visas available, and the requirements for each one, including the F2-99.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure why I couldn't locate that information - because there it is. I called 1345, but the woman I spoke with said that just putting in the time (5 or 7 years) isn't sufficient to get this visa. She said to try through the point system.

I recieved it. You need 5years on the same visa plus all the paperwork. The hardest is to get a sponser. The thing to remember is while immigration does the paperwork the visa is approved by MOJ not immi. The higher level of sponser you have the better chance of getting your visa. Mine took around 31/2 weeks.
So it is do able if you get all your paperwork done correctly. Welsheguy is a good resource. He helped me out alot.
