Frankly, I'm grateful Ron Paul will never become a flavor of the month. |
RP is hiding something, isn't he? And you have stumbled across it. Look, there are only a dozen or so people who post here. You can tell us what skeleton RP has hanging in his closet...or buried in his basement. We promise not to tell. Really, we do. [I can't see him involved in a sex scandal. I just can't. At least not with a living person. Is that it?] |

I'm pretty sure Cain's going to get exactly what he wanted: cheap publicity and a lifetime of sweet speaking fees. |
Running for president and losing is looking pretty lucrative these days. It's a bit too late to get started this year, but 2016 isn't too far off. I think I'll start up a couple of PAC's to fund my national bus tour.
Now all I need is a gimmick or catchphrase...
"Support my 10/20/30 plan! New taxes brackets will be multiples of 10 and you can file via text message! Down with hard math." |
It's too bad all the baseball analogies are already taken. |

Nah. Ron Paul is a little nutty, but he has ideas and integrity. And Gary Johnson is serious, as is Jon Huntsman.
The problem isn't the field, its the GOP electorate. |

As an outsider, I am wholly unbiased and can look on objectively. I would have to say there is some truth to both observations.
There are plenty of governors: Romney, Johnson, Huntsman, Roehmer, Perry.
There are members of Congress: Gingrich, Bachmann, Paul, Santorum.
There are representatives of the business world: Trump, Cain
On the surface at least, that's a credible field based on experience. It isn't a stellar field, but it is--or should be--credible. Then they open their mouth and prove themselves to be just the next clown out of the GOP car.
OTOH, the GOP electorate is pretty strange. Although you can't blame them for being disappointed, they should really take a look in the mirror if they want to see who's to blame. They are the ones who, over the years, promoted this field to prominence in their party. |

I was actually trying to just convey frustration that the people I think are credible alternatives to Obama (in order of preference): Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, and Jon Huntsman, are not popular enough to win the nomination. |

Cain has no chance at all. I don't even think Cain would get 40% of the national vote.
Tbh, I think the only one who would have any chance is Ron Paul. I don't agree with everything he says or believes, but the man sticks to his platform and he's the only true Republican out of the bunch. The rest of them are simply regurgitating talking points from the Heritage Foundation. |

While I'll admit I'm an Obama guy, I'd be pretty happy with Huntsman, and could probably deal with Gary Johnson. I've got some issues with Ron Paul, but I view him as a man of character who I can respect. At the moment the GOP frontrunners strike me as a collection of clowns, not unlike the Democratic ticket of 2004. |

A question for those who have been around here for awhile...northway says he's an Obama guy, I'm a self-proclaimed Democrat, and there are a handful other openly liberal posters...but there are a train-load of libertarians, Libertarians, lIbertarians, liBertarians, libErtarians, libeRtarians, etc.
My question: Where are the Republicans? Have we ever had an open Republican on the board? |

I don't think you understand what the republican party is if you think Ron Paul is a true Republican. |

A chance based on what...other than wishful thinking? What numbers are you using? I looked at the latest numbers I could find (posted on the Election 2012 Underway thread) and see nothing, nothing at all, that would justify your optimism. He has broken into the lower two-digits in some states. Even in South Carolina, one of the most conservative states in the world's history of conservatism, RP is only polling at 5%--and that's from Rasmussen, a conservative polling company.
I'd like to repeat Leon's statement: "I don't think you understand what the republican party is if you think Ron Paul is a true Republican." |

I think the problem is that people conflate "conservative" and "Republican", whereas that this point they often have very little in common. |

As has been pointed out repeatedly, he polls better against Obama than any other Republican candidate. The general population won't elect George Bush III, the semi-conservative flip-flopper, or the guy who has no experience and only a tax plan to run on.
Gingrich has a chance, but he hasn't gotten a firestorm of free media promotion like those others have... yet. |
