I had been out of Canada for 3 years by the time I sorted things out. All that happened was that a friend's husband (who's an accountant) looked at it for me, and just put on my tax return form that I am a non resident for tax purposes, and they accepted it. I ask them to look at my two previous tax years, and consider giving me the status for those years. They did, gave me my money back, and I in returned paid back the GST checks I had been getting for the last couple of years.
OP, I am nowhere near being an expert on this stuff, so you can take my experience with a grain of salt if you wish  |

Yes, I am wrong about the tax agreement. There is one as of Sept 2006. |

The current one was signed in 2006. The one it replaced was signed in 1978.
