Hello Everyone,
I am an aspiring career ESL professor, and could use some input.
I'm considering a degree from the University of Southern Mississippi titled "Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages". I'm also considering a degree from Western New Mexico University titled "Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies". Both degrees will concentrate in TESOL/Bilingual Education/English/Spanish, however the title seems to be the most important thing to potential Korean University employers, my target job. If I were to choose the latter, I assume my resum? would have to forcefully state my coursework.
Would having an ambiguous degree title hurt my chances of getting a University position?
Thanks for your input.

Nobody wants to weigh in on this? Dave's doesn't have an opinion about MA programs and their effect on one's career?
Really? |

In my PERSONAL experience the name of the MA program and coursework / thesis were less of an issue that simply having the related MA (insofar as getting to the interview stage of a job application).
MY discussion as to the relevance of the MA (coupled with experience, soft skills, etc) to the job at hand was what got me past the interview to the job.

I am finishing up an interdisciplinary program in foreign studies and my degree is directed towards individuals that are already teaching subject courses in international schools. If you're going to teach ESL most of your life maybe a TESOL degree is better for you. It's more applied and will get you into cash cow esl jobs more quickly like Saudi Arabia, and the countries in that region. |

I don't think Saudi Arabia is in my future... I'm gay, and Korea will be enough of a challenge. But maybe? Who knows. I am planning on doing my CELTA, and I'm finishing up the Peace Corps, so hopefully my resum? will get me something. |
