I'm a Middle Schooler and my co-teacher thinks that I have the day off on Thursday, but thinks that it will be taken out of my vacation days.

Surely vacation days should be optional? I thought that I'd have it off as the day is in red on our school calendar (like public holidays) but it turns out that while I may not have to come in, it will be taken out of my vacation days.

I need my vacation days for January. I just have the bare minimum necessary for 2 full weeks off in January.

I'd tell your co-teacher that I think I'll be at the school on Thursday and I think someone needs to be there to open the office door for me. I think I will catch flu on Friday.

thursday is the university entrance exam so you will likely be starting an hour later so that the students taking the exam can get to their test locations on time, most of the country does this, workplaces open later etc even univ classes scheduled for 9am usually get canceled

if your school is giving the exam then you will likely have the day off

don't get trapped. it is the principal's choice to OFFER you the day off with the following conditions.

1. no conditions, regular day off

2. take a sick day officially, but no one is hating

3. vacation day from your meager allowance of 18

It is your option to refuse or accept or negotiate. If they try and pressure you then tell them tough shit and that you will stick out 8 hrs. at your desk

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I was told that every date typed in red on our school calendar meant a day off school when I started working here. Hence the confusion when I was told today that I need to take a day out of my vacation time.

Disappointed, but not going to take the day off. Need my days for January.

Hate to even ask this, but is the poster's problem the "norm" as in the red days marked have to be inquired about? I was under the assumption that any red days were just days off - no conditions?

I was looking at our school calendar. The SMOE/Epik calendars are the official ones and I don't think this Thursday is marked as red on those.

But it is on our own school calendar, hence the confusion. But most of the confusion in this instance arises from the fact that my co-teacher told me that anything in red, even on our school calendar, meant a day off.

But not anymore it seems.

Thursday is not a "red day" (a national holiday).

Many (but not all) middle schools will be closed that day. If your school is going to be closed (because many teachers are monitoring the exam), its up to the principal to decide if that will count as a vacation day or not for idled teachers. K-teachers too. Ask.

Elementary schools will be unaffected.

If your school is one of the locations for the entrance exam, you aren't allowed on the premises unless you're an exam proctor. Koreans take these exams very seriously and even have cops to make sure the proctors are registered as one. If this is the case, obviously, you can't come to school and it shouldn't count against any of your vacation days.

No classes on the 9th or 10th or 15th or 18th here.

9th is study for the exam
10th is the exam
15th is proficiency test
and 18th is the school festival.

If its not a national public holiday you dont get it off (i assume based of course on what youve written... some people will, others wont, thats just the way it goes). If you keep holding onto the line "but they told me all the days in red on our calender was a holiday!" youll just wind yourself up. Let it go, they were giving you incorrect info because they likely forgot about the exceptions or just assumed youd get them off like everyone else. But yorue not on their contract, and sometimes you get a vice principal or principal that thinks NETs are lazy and need to be kept on a tight leash with days off. Luck of the draw im afraid.

Deskwarming aint all that terrible anyway, plenty worse ways to earn a living than coming into work and sitting about doing whatever you like. And at least now you know. Just find out when the public holidays are and youre golden. Smile

Chuckles! Your location states 'teaching reading comprehension' and you waffle on about having no classes when the subject is about days off!

I'm not going to hold onto the line that they told me at the start that all days in red are days off. They've let me down on so many other issues that this comes as no surprise whatsoever.

About desk-warming on Thursday however, even when there's no class, I'm not allowed to do "whatever I want".
