A sin tax? A tax that is greater than the price of the product itself? I doubt the NRA and their buddies in Congress would allow a tax that could reduce the profits of the gun industry. |

I've never understood why people make multiple one line posts in a row. |

On the other hand, gun ownership in the US is at a record low:
| Quote: |
However, by 2010 household gun ownership dropped to 32.3 percent of U.S. households reporting having any guns in the home -- the lowest level ever recorded by the General Social Survey.
Male gun ownership peaked in 1990, with 52.4 percent of U.S. men reported personally owning a gun, but this dropped to 33.2 percent in 2010. Female gun ownership peaked in 1982 at 14.3 percent and dropped to 9.9 percent in 2010. |

No because smoking isn't protected by the constitution. If you start taxing guns, might as well tax you everytime you express yourself.

I don't understand why people feel the need to go to Church or play World of Warcraft, doesn't mean I think the government should be involved in its regulation. |

Being protected by the Constitution doesn't equate to tax exemption.
Otherwise you wouldn't pay taxes on property. |

The word "reporting" that says it all here.
A great many gun owners don't feel it's the government's business knowing how many guns they have. It should also be noted that doctors have been instructed to ask if there is a gun in the house -- something many fear may be used by liberals in government or more likely, insurance companies looking to avoid a payout or just raise rates. There is nothing wrong with telling doctors point-blank, "That's none of your business." It is also not illegal to lie about it.
States differ in rules on this issue. Some states have begun keeping ammo logs to determine who is buying ammunition -- something that I know for a fact many gun owners go out of their way to avoid, even if buying just a box or two for plinking.
Me, I buy my plinking ammo online and don't care much about it, unless Wal-mart is cheaper. Tulammo is quite inexpensive there. Steel-cased, Russian, and not terribly clean, but performs well enough. At the rate brass is skyrocketing in price, it's only a matter of time before brass-cased ammo is very expensive.
Best deals I find are at www.sgammo.com or www.slickguns.com , for those of you still stateside and able to enjoy the hobby. |

If you don't use a gun for sport why have one?
Maybe you should just ban the sale of ammunition, it will take a few years, but most of those weapons will be eventually rendered completely harmless. |

Personally, I like to do my own handloading; it's much cheaper, in the long run, than buying commercially, although the initial investment can often be a bit expensive. I like to shoot historic firearms, both muzzleloading and cartridge, so in order to get some ammo it is necessary to do handloading. I shoot a couple black powder cartridge arms--.50-45 Remington rolling block carbine and .45-70 Springfield trapdoor--that ammo isn't readily available for (there are .45-70 cartridges available, but they are loaded with modern powders, which are not safe to use in bp arms). I buy the brass, bullets, primers and black powder and put them together on my press.
Brass can be re-used several times, plus I mold my own bullets, so the overall price can be reduced over time. When need be, I can even make my own black powder (It's legal to do in the States, up to fifty pounds); it's not as responsive as a commercial powder, like Goex, but it still works well. |

Most likely cause you have no knowledge of history, it's to protect against tyrannical government. With is the norm in history not the exception, as the western world is finding out. Read the declaration of Independence and you will see that the government today is in many ways worse than what the states rebelled against. Anyone who trusts the state is a total fool. |
