Probably, the first thing I noticed when shopping here. I looked at all the prices, shoppers and thought: "Wow. Do you realize how badly you're getting screwed?" The way the Korean government is preventing free market competition is unconscionable.

when it comes to patriotism, the majority of koreans are worse than americans...and thus, they dont care if samsung screws them when they buy a p.o.s phone or laptop...

Me: "Why do you like Korea?"
Typical Korean Girl: "Because I'm Korean..."

In Britain, your paying 16,000 quid for a Mini Cooper S.

In Korea, a Mini Cooper S is 40 million won or 22,000 pounds.

Korea still uses the broom handle.

How about minced beef? 4 quid for a kilo in London.

15,000 won or 8 quid in S. Korea (for imported Aussie beef)

I don't understand why Korean consumers don't yell: "Do we have to be number one? Can we be less than London?"

Apples and oranges. Eating is cheap as hell here. Public transportation costs pennies. Buying KOREAN products is often cheap.

What really drags it down is the electronics and goods of that nature. When I lived in Japan, I found everything was way more expensive than Korea with the exception of electronics. Sometimes the same electronics cost three times more in Korea than in Japan, which is strange considering how ridiculously and unfairly expensive Japan can be.

In Japan though, you're talking about a country more protectionist and with perhaps more regulations than this one. How comparing Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia, etc.?

Yeah, not really. The same LG or Samsung TV that costs you 750,000 here will run you around $330 in the States.

I have known this for some time. It boils down to the average Koreans' inability to comparison shop via the internet using English. They [Koreans] basically live in a very small Hangul bubble completely removed from reality. A similar situation as in North Korea. However here this arrises from shear ignorance.

The car situation between UK and Korea is way out of whack.......The Kia Sportage that I recently bought for 25 mill (on-the-road) is 23,000 pounds in UK.....that's 41 mill at the moment. Huge difference.

Car prices between Korea and USA seem to be fairly equal at the moment.......although until very recently Korean cars were cheaper in the States.

Fruit, veg and meat is the big scandal in Korea. We're getting horribly shafted there........and any high-end or niche electronics or hobby stuff.

My depressing suspicion is that a lot Koreans, especially in the middle-class, are secretly kind of proud to see the high prices because they stupidly think that it means they're getting the highest quality and that they must be on a par with Japan nowadays.

The base model Kia Sportage - 6-speed manual, 2.4L is less than 21 million won in the U.S. (based on current exchange rates).

The 6-speed auto 2.4L is a little less than 24 million won in the U.S., which would be about the same.

However, let's not forget the vehicle is manufactured in Korea and then shipped to the U.S. Shipping + customs duties = should sell for a lot more in the U.S.

And some people say the free market is the devil and our country should keep it's protectionist policies in order to help our economy. Protectionism only protects the giant corporations and their monopolies on everything in Korea. As a result, the consumers get shafted.

I'm sure Mini Coopers are more expensive than 16,000. Anyway I wouldn't be able to afford one in either country. New cars are way overpriced, I'd always buy something used.

Oh well at least good to know that somewhere is worse than UK, we always like to assume that were are getting ripped off more than anyone else.
