The Family Circus guy.
Quote: |
Bil Keane, the creator of Family Circus, died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his home in Paradise Valley, Ariz. He was 89.
Born in Philadelphia, Keane taught himself to draw and eventually dropped the second L from his name when signing his cartoons in order to distinguish himself. His first cartoon was published in 1936 in the Philadelphia Daily News.

I can say with some assurance that I was never a fan. The strip defined insipidness. But you can't argue with success, and Keane obviously found a winning formula, pandering to a widespread taste for adorable kids and aw-gee-ain't-that-cute punch lines.
One amusing installment that I do remember was supposed to have been made by the young son, and was drawn to look as if done by a kid. It was portraying a night with a babysitter while the parents were out. One picture was captioned "Babysitter drinking from daddy's measuring glass", and showed the babysitter gulping down whiskey or something. That was about as edgy as it got.

For what it is worth, I always thought the Family Circus was alright. It is certainly an American classic. |
