Way flooded. After months of ignoring it because I'm leaving soon and couldn't be bothered with moving, it finally blew out less than two months before my probable final exit date. God damn it. I'm half expecting to return home to a damp crater now that the constant slow drip has exploded. (Or more likely ankle deep water.)
What should I do? In a situation like this, can I get my key money back immediately? Do I have to pay to dispose of the stuff that was ruined from being in this hellhole? The lease ran out in June and as part of my policy of avoidance I just ignored this fact and kept paying rent as usual. The place passed uninhabitable about two weeks ago when a smaller leak flooded the bedroom ceiling and filled the last clean room with mold. I'd reported other leaks before and nothing was done so I just ignored it. (Yes, I'm insane and don't give a fat flying &#$% about anything any more. Just counting down the days...) But having to put on rubber boots to get to the kitchen is just unacceptable. I'm drawing a line!!!
Any advice? |

Frankly I just want to take everything of value and get the hell out, leaving the rest to rot. I don't care about claiming damages or anything like that, I just want my key money back. |

Are you kidding? You've been ignoring ankle-deep water in your apartment for months? |

No, I've been ignoring damp moldy walls for months. The ankle deep water is new as of this morning, and it's only in the storage room. SO FAR. The kitchen isn't that deep (yet) and most of it is under the laminate. I can see it sloshing around underneath when I walk on it.
Edit: Oh yeah, I did inform the landlord of the problem. What the hell can be done about it though? There are at least four major leaks. I can hear water running inside the walls for gods sake. The shower drain suddenly stopped working. I'm freaked right out.

I would get out ASAP! That's terrible. Can you get to a gosiwon or motel? Is your employer providing housing? |

Look on the bright side - in a couple of weeks you'll have an ice rink in your apt!
Just charge people to come in and have a skate!
I hope you have kept a record of any chats between you and the owner, otherwise I'm sure you will be liabel for the damage!
Dont count on getting your key money back!
Me thinks you have a BIG problem + a big fight on your hands!
Best of luck! |

Since when is a tenant responsible for faulty plumbing? I don't have access to the pipes. I couldn't do anything to them even if I wanted to. |

Best of luck! Have you spoken to the owner yet/had a Korean speak to them for you?
If you haven't already, I sugget you keep a record of everything that is said - I hope you do get your money back ok and quickly but I dont think it's going to be that easy for you!
I hope i'm wrong! |

I told them two months ago that I was planning on moving out at the end of Dec... nothing in writing yet but I guess trying to give official notice and pay up until then is actually a pretty good plan. I'm going to think about that, thanks. Might be worth it.
Based on dealings with the landlord, I haven't gotten the impression that I need to worry about getting my key money back. If it happens I'll deal with it but I honestly don't feel too concerned about the possibility. I'd definitely give someone else the same advice you did, but my personal assessment is it will be okay. And even if it won't, there's not much point worrying about it now.
Anyway I came home and the small leaks (2) are still merrily dampening the place up but the big ones have stopped and the puddles are gone. Even the water gushing inside the wall is fixed. Crisis over.
I think I still want to move though. While I was panicking I made an appointment to look at a place and I'm still going to go and see it. I'm tired of this. It's not the first leak, just the worst so far. |

You are not responsible for the plumbing break or the damages unless you let what was a small leak develop into a catastrophic leak through ignoring it.
Now, I have no idea if thats what you did as you seem have said you told the landlord about the small dripping leak before. If you did not and you ignored it and it then burst, you can kiss a large chunk of your key money deposit good bye!
If you did and the landlord did nothing, then you should be in the clear money wise. |

No, not really!
A similar situation happened to someone I know last winter and the owner blamed her.
Her school and Korean friend were all involved and in the end both parties agreed to pay 50% towards the costs......... |
