Want it mostly for backup and movies as my laptop hd is only 250gb and is almost full plus I have a box of dvds I want to transfer to it also. Laptop has usb2 ports. So will back up my windows or whatever it is you do but the rest will be all movies, it will essentially be my movie library.

Buffallo mini station 500gb 109k won.

LG cube xd7 500 gb at 120k won

Samsung s2 320gb at 88k won

Samsung m2 500 gb at 88k won (is the s2 better than the m2?)

OR - would I be better off just getting a 1tb 5400rpm HD put into my laptop instead?

They're cheaper and last longer right?

There isn't really any consensus on which HDD brand is better. It's just a crap shoot. Some die and some don't.

Just pick the one with the highest capacity at a price you can afford.

Or would the laptop hd upgrade be a better choice?

I don't think so.....why take out a perfectly good 250GB HDD? From my POV, it's better to add another one.

Unfortunately for you HDD prices are really high at the moment because of Thailand flooding........so getting the most GB for the least money is the route I would take right now. Ignore the brand.

Yeah that makes sense.

Just wondering why the samsung s2 is only 320gb and the samsung m2 is the same price for 500gb....

No reviews for the m2 online but good reviews for the s2.

Zero reviews for the lg one at all.

The buffallo one gets good reviews too. So prob either s2 to save money or buffallo one for an extra 20k and a lot more space.

Am still worried about it though. What you said makes sense but if it breaks I'm buggered - all those hundreds of films lost.

Can't afford a ssd one.

No I'm thinking the 1tb upgrade for the laptop best option. It's longevity I'm concerend about (but cannot spend 300k+ on an ssd ext hd.)

Oh, the stomach bothering anxieties of choice.

1TB 2.5'' laptop drives are pretty new tech and not entirely proven.......they would likely be more prone to crash than a 3.5'' external drive.

The 320GB drives are single platter. So they're fast as the read/write head is only working on 1 platter. Faster means more expensive per GB.
