The millennium date of Nov. 11 this year, or 11/11/11, that comes but once in a thousand years is keeping obstetrics clinics busy in Korea.
Many pregnant women are apparently trying to fix the birthday of their child for superstitious reasons. One women's clinic in Jung-gu, central Seoul, has over 15 Caesarean section scheduled for Friday, way more than its daily average of 10, while other obstetrics clinics reportedly have 20 to 30 percent more C-section booked for the date.
"There are rumors that pregnant women are fixing their delivery date for Friday to get a so-called 'golden number' for their baby's resident registration number that starts with 111111."
But doctors say that forced delivery is not a good idea. An obstetrician said, "A forced premature delivery can harm the mother's health as well as the baby's, and the child has to stay in the incubator." |

I don't know why they're calling it "Millennium" Peppero day, because 11/11/11 comes every century. In fact, the next one will be even more amazing because it will be 11/11/2111.
That's seven ones! |

I wonder how it was a thousand years ago?
11/11/1111
or how about one hundred and nine thousand years from now?
11/11/111,111 |

Silly humans, your numbers are immaterial and merely a primitive measurement of your limited perception of time! |

My question is, why are doctors agreeing to deliver babies prematurely on this particular date just to accommodate superstitious mothers? If it's not in the best interest of the mother or the baby wouldn't proper medical procedure be to refuse and tell the mothers they need to wait until the baby is ready? There is no reason for an obstetrics clinic to be busier on this particular date than any other. I know my doctor won't agree to deliver my baby early just because I choose an arbitrary lucky date. |

I'm pretty sure the doctors are only agreeing to cases where there will be no additional risk in the procedure.
The article is VERY misleading with its numbers. A clinic has 10 average C-sections a day and on 11-11 they had 15. So, in a given week they have 70 C-sections, and on 1 day they had 5 extra. That's more like a 7% increase.
ALSO, you should consider that some of those people had C-Sections scheduled on the 10th or the 12th. Maybe they wanted to move the procedure 1 day to the 11th instead. So, out of 20 procedures (10th and the 12th together) 5 people wanted to move their date 1 day earlier/later to have it on the eleventh.
Take a look at it that way and its doesn't seen so wreckless. |

Many Koreans are very superstitious in terms of when their child should be born. My wife was in labor on July 23 (first day of one of the astrological signs) and she was told to go home as there wasn't room for her at the clinic. We were told (since she was having a natural birth) to come back when she just couldn't take the pain anymore. It turns out that many women scheduled their c-sections for this day so that their child could be born on the first day of the astrological sign. |
