just another question, but would i be able to travel back home to canada with a month left before my passport expires?

going home = yes (provided there are no stops in between).
returning = no.

I found it to be a huge pain in the ass, but it might actually be easier for someone who is a visitor (no job, so you can make it to the embassy in their short window for passport renewals/applications, and no guarantor needed).

Depends.

If you go through the transit lounge in HK you do not need to "enter" HK and therefore do not need a new passport. Your short time passport is adequate.

If you do want to "enter" HK (go through passport control and leave the airport) then yes, you need 6 months validity on your passport.

I'm going to try and renew mine on Friday. I'm really nervous because I DON'T have any of the extra ID they want, just passport, birth certificate, and an expired driver's licence [sic]. (The directions say it has to be valid.)

Let us know how it goes... I'm in the same situation (just an expired licence). I have a another passport, but not sure if it will work if it's not a Canadian gov. document.

I was able to get a new passport with only a birth certificate and my old passport as proof of identity. The lady at the embassy crossed the licence off on my application and wrote my passport info in that section instead. I had to show my ARC when picking it up.

I still have my SIN memorized but I don't know where the physical card is so I couldn't use that either.
