Because your original post didn't reference illegal threats, only people who want to "put down everything we stand for". I've been comparing your opinion to that of my own and U.S. law, not arguing against the British PM's decision

A bit after the fact, but...
Trying to prevent people from burning symbols is problematic.
If, for example, there were a ban on flag-burning, it could be countered in two ways:
1) if you're not allowed to burn the US flag, then what about one with 49 stars? 48?
2) if you're not allowed to burn a "flag", what about a newspaper painted with a 50-star flag?
The same applies to poppies. What if I'm just burning a poppy-esque flower?
It's best not to go there. The better option is to just ignore it. |

I'm curious about the U.S. attitude to what we call poppy day (armistice day) in the UK. For us it really is a moment to reflect, everyone wears a poppy, everyone across the nation observes 2 minutes of silence. Most of us are thinking about those who sacrificed their lives in the two world wars, particularly WW1 when almost an entire generation lost their lives. The dead of other conflicts are included but Iraq or the Falklands were much more minor, and to me it in no way implies support for the Iraq war or any other imperialist wars.
I imagine in Canada it's much the same. What about the US? Do you even wear poppies? |

Freedom of speech means that people are indeed allowed to burn poppies if they want to be idiotic enough to do so. Freedom of association also means that people who want to burn poppies are allowed to join together with other people who want to burn poppies.
No, of course I don�t like people who burn poppies: but that�s got *beep* all to do with it, has it? My dislike of the *beep* little creatures is not a sufficient reason to invoke the law of the land to salve my affronted opinions.

Some people may, but it is not common. Memorial Day (end of May) was a big deal in my home town: a parade, wreaths thrown off the bridge, another carried to the town cemetary and hung on the Civil War cannon, and taps played. Veterans Day was nothing special. I don't think we even got a day off at school. |
