The number of tourists to the island totaled 940 million last year, and that is expected to rise to 1.6 billion by 2020 |
Just to put that into perspective

France attracted 78.95 million foreign tourists in 2010, making it the most popular tourist destination in the world |

It's a 'lost in translation' thing-- we all know how confused Koreans get with large numbers in English... |

True.....which I find weird because I pretty much got the Korean big numbers down pat after just a few months living in Korea......is there something inherently difficult about the western numbering system if you're coming from the Korean one?
I find myself having to correct pretty fluent Korean English speakers often on their big numbers......yet I speak Korean at a very basic level, but have no problem with the numbers. |

Yeah they mix up "million" and "billion" all the time...or at least that's been my personal experience.
I think there's three (or more) extra zeros in there somewhere. |

Well it is a bit different. For example their "million" is quite literally 100 ten thousand(s) whereas we use a totally different term from "100 or 10,000"...we say a "million". So they link two everyday numbers together whereas we use a different word to express "million."
That's my theory on it anyway... |

I still get confused when it goes up to 억's. Nothing to do with Korean, just too many zeros. What a pointless load of numbers! |

I still think they got something wrong or they're counting everyone that came to Jeju in a year as a tourist.
940 million is 940,000,000. That's almost 80,000,000 people a month. That's 30 million more than the entire population of Korea in one month. |

I was thinking the same. I've been to Jeju and it couldn't bear 8 million in a month- forget 80 million. I think they are counting every tourist and family member, businessperson, stewardesses.... |

Maybe it is the number of tourists that have arrived since 1653 when Hendrick Hamel first washed ashore on the island paradise and immediately initiated the count at 36 (or 64 if you include the dead bodies!!!!).

This story shocked me enough to send an email to the address listed in the article. After 30 seconds of 'research', I was tickled by the fact that the UNWTO (Tourism organization) quoted
"Out of a global total of 940 million tourists, the top ten international tourism destinations in 2010 were (see the barometer for the full rankings)"
Yeah, it's sooo realistic that about 98% of global tourism visited the second (third)-rate destination of Jeju...
I gave 'em an earful, will gladly post the reply (if it isn't babelfished) |

Given that integrity is not exactly a cornerstone of the Korean media, I am not sure what you will achieve but good luck. Lets us know how you get on. |
