Guys, I'm kind of surprised. Am I out of the loop, here? I see 2.5 plus housing to live in Busan, plus about 12 hours base, and that doesn't sound like bad pay to me.
That's what we start at in Seoul, and we are working 15 hours base.
Busan is cheaper to live in, is it not? |

Swamp: It isn't bad pay but it isn't great pay either. It comes down to what you are looking for in a job. For an ESL job 2.5 plus housing, plus 4-5 mos. vacation is pretty damn good in my opinion. Still, it all depends on what you are looking for (professionally speaking) and what your qualifications are etc... For some that is a great job. For others it is just so-so. Zappa felt it wasn't in line with what he needed to leave his current position. I too, would not leave a job teaching content courses for ESL courses, even if it was a bit more money that I currently make.
There are so many factors in play when deciding what is and what isn't a good job. Again, compared to any hagwon/p.s. job it is a huge improvement (in my opinion) but what I think doesn't really matter. Different strokes for different folks. |

Zappa,
I too would have turned it down. Of course, for those just looking to get a uni job it certainly is an improvement over any hagwon or p.s. job as it is hard to beat 4-5 mos. paid vacation. |
No doubt, totally agree with you. Just wasnt enough to make me leave where I am. |
When did she call you, recently?
2 million - 2.5 million isn't much, regardless of how much vacation they offer. |

| We exchanged emails 2 weeks ago or so. 2.5 + .3 for housing for 9-12hrs/week and full vacation isnt bad at all. |

| I'm glad they told you a salary. They wouldn't tell me and I completed the interview there. |

Actually it can be but the difference is not as great these days. |

Actually this is a great example of why people need to avoid looking at the salary out of the job context as some sort of trump card for all other job conditions...
2.5 for 12 hours a week + FULL vacation is far better than say 2.5 for 30 hours a week and 2 weeks vacation...just a simple example.
The job is decent for Busan and for many other places in Korea as well. |

| This IS decent pay (+ 4-5 mths vaca). For this, I'd move to Busan, and I'd take a pay cut. Love BUSAN. |

| For those interested, the salary on the contract was around 2.35 per month plus the .30 housing allowance mentioned. Overtime pay was 14,000 won/hour. |

| What's with all the uni positions that pay extremely low overtime? I've seen ads for 12,000, 14,000, and 15,000won per overtime class. |

Damn, I get 25,000 at my PS! Sounds like these Unis are getting spoiled by the flooded market of MAs. I wish people would think a little longer before starting a mindless chase for a Master's degree. You can be just as un- or under-employed with a Master's as not, except now you have worse debt problems than before |
