Opening documentary statement:
Quote:
This is the story of the destiny of the human-machine civilization.

The destiny we have come to refer to as The Singularity.

Just started watching this documentary. Have you seen it? What do you think about the idea that man and machine are merging and bio-tech future of man may hold longer life spans, or even live forever? Is he a nutjob? Just from watching the first couple of minutes of the movie, I can see that he's gifted, but is he for real when he says that in another 20 years we'll all have nanomachines running around our internal organs helping us all live longer?

Your thoughts please! Death is knocking at me old door, and I want to live forever! Cool

Will the world be divided into those who advance their bodies with these techno-bio adjustments to enhance intelligence, etc. and those who choose to stay as nature created them? What would you do?

It probably will come about at some stage as long as resources permit, but I think the expense factor alone will great a huge divide.

Haven't seen the documentary but I'm reading the book now. I put it aside to read Breens' book on these wacky little Korean people, so I still haven't broken past the hundred page mark and can't give any detailed analysis. But, it's full of very interesting information and ideas, and I'd certainly recommend it, though his writing can read like arrogantly stated, inevitable speculation. Kurzweil is a pretty innovative guy and he definitely did some hefty research for this one. The exponential growth of technology stuff is the most fascinating part. Of course us lowly humans will find a way to mess it up, but the benefits for science and the future would be unlimited. That is, if he's right and if we don't use it to destroy ourselves first. Good read though, give it a buy. For the record though, it's fairly high brow stuff, meaning a lot of mathematical/scientific charts/lingo/etc., so if that stuff bores you, stick with the documentary.

Ha, interesting, maybe you're right. I don't necessarily buy into all of the points of immediate societal tranformation, but I also don't consider myself a nerd. Have you read the book?
