Looks like at least 5 bars burned up right in the middle of hooker hill. Tiger is one I can still read. And Texas and one up from that. All th way down to Rosy.

That must be related to this story:

http://koreajoongangdaily.joinsmsn.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2944273&cloc=joongangdaily

In the article it said the damage was estimated to be 25mil won. Doesn't that seem a little low if, as you say, 5 bars were affected? I should point out that I haven't seen the street since it happened.

Maybe 4 bars? They are beyond repair. Roofs mostly gone. The 25 mill figure would not cover one bar. At first I thought insurance too.

Probably a fitting end to the place. Too dark for photos, and after soju kettles at pollys, I can barely type as it is.

And didn't they just get yet another curfew lifted?

I think they are now reaping the benefits of lowering the bar for entry into the armed forces.

Just last week, I saw a news story about gangs infiltrating the US military to gain heavy-weapons experience. The Korean media had a field-day with that one.

"The soldier was in violation of a nighttime curfew imposed on U.S. servicemembers and was at a venue declared off limits to U.S. servicemembers since 2003, U.S. military officials said.

"The standing of U.S. forces in South Korea has plummeted recently following two rape cases and perceptions that U.S. servicemembers get special treatment in investigation of crimes, and this latest incident is likely to further fan discontent among South Koreans.

"South Koreans say the U.S. military does not do enough to curb troop misbehavior."

A few illegal brothels burn down and it's because the U.S. military is not doing enough to control its troops?

Check out the November 17, 2011 posting by Jake:

Ill leave it up to other people to pick apart the article, but I find it ironic that the writer criticizes soldiers for visiting the bars, while totally disregarding the facts that:

1. The bars are purposely set up as close as possible to US military bases.
2. The WHORES working in these bars are Korean.
3. The WHORES in these bars service foreigners and military personnel exclusively.
4. The WHORES in the bars arent even good at being WHORES, so many choose to steal from customers instead.
5. The Korean police completely ignore/overlook and in some cases extort/accept bribes from these Korean businesses and their Korean owners.
6. If Korean lawmakers cared about this problem, it would have been solved a long time ago.

The commanding officer was heard reprimanding his troops from two floors up the next morning after the perps were caught.

His exact words were not clear but they went something like this:

"THE ROOF, THE ROOF, THE ROOF IS ON FIRE...unintelligible..."

I am curious swampfox when did they lower the bar for entry into the military? I thought that you had to have a clean criminal record to enlist. Has that changed and when.

I think it is more likely that gangs recruit former military than try to infiltrate the military.

It's still few enough incidents that it could be an aberration, but regardless, it looks pretty freaking bad.
