Just wondering if anyone has gotten a pet while in Korea? If so, what? and what do you plan on doing with it when you leave?

We got a dog in Seoul and plan on taking it home when we return for good. We're actually in USA now and she came along for the flight! In my opinion you shouldn't get any animal in Korea if you're not going to take it with you when you leave. Very Happy --Tembo

I see some people have pets or are considering one. I am thinking of getting a dog I can then take with me to Thailand for a year and then back home. Are dogs expensive here? I saw a few stores in Myeoung Dong and was sure shocked how they just put 10 puppies in a cramped little cage. Do they even have shots? I am not sure I will get one but if anyone has some more info I would love to hear it. One guy there said a small Dashund was like $600,000- must be a foreigner price.

I feel like a broken record telling people this all the time....

If you are going to get a pet please adopt it from a shelter in your city (most universities have one ) or go to daegu and go the korean SPCA. We got our beautiful orange cat from there. He is great!!! Best cat I have ever had. And yes we plan on taking him back to Canada with us

If you need info on the shelter in Daegu pm me

forget shelters...well, they aren't a bad idea.
But we got/rescued our dog from our neighbours.

Speaking of; I need some help with japan customs in Narita.
1) i've been told that i'll have to go through security again yes?
2) is it possible to check my dog from busan to vancouver or will i have to deal with all that crap again in Narita?
that's all for now..

just talked to a travel agency
1) just "passin' through" in tokyo, so no problems with the (surprise) quarunteen that i was freakin' out over.
2) checkin' the dog? Who knows...not me.

lastly, the travel agency said "You will need two pieces of paper: the shot paper (for rabies) and the medical certificate".
Has anyone heard of this "medical certficate"? I'd assumed that it was her innoculation record but i'm not sure.
I think i may have to go to the "main pet hospital" down here in Busan.

I picked up two stray kittens last summer. They are now healthy, happy, well-fed and sassy.

I found a sick and (slightly) injured cat in the street. I didn't want the responsibility and I tried to walk away, but I know that Koreans generally dislike cats, and I didn't expect there would be anyone else who would consider helping him.

So I took him to the vet, and then home and now he is the coolest little cat - so affectionate and adorable.

But I worry about what will happen to him when we leave. I think it's going to be very hard to find a Korean who will take him in...and I don't fancy leaving him with foreigners, because they wont be able to offer him a permanent home.

I didn't adopt my cat, really it adopted me. I found a kitten and he just ran to me. I tried to find him a home, and then just broke down and kept him.

Had cats everywhere but never taken them with us. This is partly because they would have died if we didn't take them in the first place, partly because there was someone else to take them when we moved on and primarily because the quarantine laws in the countries we were travelling between were a nightmare.

British citizens face a really tough and expensive process if they want to take a cat or dog back from Japan, but at least there is an agreement for this. Between the UK and Korea, there is no agreement and this necessitates paying for 6 months quarantine in the UK if you are willing to go through all that.

Easier to find someone here to pass the cat onto when we leave and that is our plan.

So, don't tar everyone with the same brush and play the virtuous with us by stating we have some moral binding to take the animal with us when we move on... it's a cat not a child. It'll get over it. Here's hoping you will too Rolling Eyes
