That'd probably have been my reaction too. "You're not my dad" to my ears = bratty child being disrespectful to a step parent. |
None of the people interviewed as to why they didn't intervene mentioned any of these as an excuse. |

You mean all of the ONE "people" they interviewed?
Because in that video I see one person (a woman) being interviewed as to why she didn't intervene. |

In my experience, most people will not get involved. Or, more specifically, be the first to get involved. People are generally confused by crisis, and tend to avoid it. In most cases, I think it's a healthy instinct.
Often, the people that do get involved are people who have experience with crisis/emergencies. Off-duty officers, firefighters, EMTs. Some people just have the wits, training, and experience to handle difficult situations....some do not.
Those that do not frustrate me, but I can understand them. |

Except that it doesn't show that. It is not a real scenario, and even if it were, kids say stuff like that all the time to stepparents, and even at times to biological parents.
Forcible abductions of children are extremely rare, and rare practically to the point of non-existence when done in plain view of others. Can you link us to a single real such case? |
So you're saying the average person on the street knows this? Are you also implying that everyone or even the majority of the ones who did not help knew this as well? |
Their knowing this or not has nothing to do with it. The point is that a real scenario would look different, in which case the results would likely be different, but this possibility is so miniscule that it is not something worth fretting over. |

Did any of the people who were watching it think it was fake? It appears no. It was real enough for two guys to come to her aid. |

I thought the comments decrying the people who did nothing were quite hilarious... like they would've done anything themselves.
I think America needs a wake up call on violence committed within families and circles of people we are familiar with, rather than strangers. We're all so caught up with xenophobia, yet fail to realize that violence and abduction is usually committed against us by those we are at least acquaintances with.
The Gift of Fear was a good book in my opinion, and it mentioned what pkang0202 has, that strangers can oftentimes be more helpful than harmful (given that there is no bystander effect and you go to them for help), since it is unlikely that a person you go to for assistance will be a person with intention to hurt you.
The news story itself draws more attention to the fact that we tend to be people of inaction. We don't like to get involved in other people's business if there is a possibility that they need help. Now... if it's about how Brad Pitt is dating some so and so celebrity? That's so important!! Of course we have to get in on the know!! |

Are you saying you DO know what bystanders, statistically speaking, are more likely to be thinking during this type of occurrence? Because that would be some trick. |
