This kinda goes along with a post I was reading about sexually active middle school girls being promiscuous towards their teacher...Has anyone heard about a big social problem on the internet here in Korea where 50 year old+ men are chatting with 13, 14 year old girls and bribing them with money to meet somewhere for sexual acts? We had a discussion about it in this morning business class. I couldn't believe how popular this situation is. They said it's huge over in Japan and that the gov't here is trying to crack down on it. Sure, things like this exist back home, but they said it's a major problem and it's getting worse. For the most part, the girls I've had at this age seem rather behind the times..."ew, kiss a boy!" This really suprised me.

It's kept rather quiet, but it goes back a long time, I believe. Check out the movie Samaria for a recent take on the issue.

Gumjung Police Station in Busan arrested a 43-year-old sergeant, working in the Criminal Department, for raping a 15-year-old high school girl he met during an investigation into prostitution conducted through Internet chatting. The girl was recently questioned by police for having sold herself for sex countless times through Internet chat site since last year.

There seems to be some controversy over the age of consent.

This site (AgeOfConsent.com) indicates 13 for the age of consent in Korea. However, it also shows 19 may be the age of consent.

But that is what I thought we did as teachers?

That is what i was told - You are a foreign man, so you evidently aren't trust worthy with female students of any age in your classroom and we will be watching you at all times. Rolling Eyes

For all those of you who are disgusted to think that Korea might have 13 as the age of consent, check out this news item from Canada:

http://www.canoe.ca/CNEWSLaw0204/23_consent-cp.html

Quote:
Currently, the age of consent is 14 except in situations when a relationship of trust or authority exists, or the relationship is deemed exploitative, such as in child pornography or prostitution. In such situations, the age of consent is 18.

Disgusting bunch of pervs over there...

It's 19 here, not 13.

Japan is a different story. And according to what I've read, the ajosshi/young girl thing has been a common part of culture for generations. Western folks have just learned about it on a larger scale in recent years.

Japanese consider teen sex just to be part of growing up, and that the individual person can experiement and do what they want.

Wow I am surprised at Canada. I always thought 16 was the age of consent. When I was in university we always used to joke about the guys dating highschool girls as doing "jailbait"...guess technically we were wrong.

I think Canada has a law that allows for prosecution of any Canadian anywhere who engages in child prostitution or exploitation.

It's called "enjo kosai" - compensated dating. It used to be huge, and much more open. It's illegal now, but still exists.

The equivalent term in Korean is .

It was big in Korea too, although not as big as Japan. Seems it has waned a bit..
