I have open office.

I know to send a document to Microsoft Word people I have to attach the file extension .doc

But what if they have the newer version, 2007 Word that uses .docx extensions? Can they still open a .doc file, or does it have to be .docx?

If you have Open Office, what file extension should I use all the time?

Thanks!

You don't add an extension to the file name.* You select "Save As" from the file menu or you can use the keyboard shortcut: CTRL+SHIFT+S. When the file save window pops up, you then scroll down to select either Microsoft Word 95 (doc) or Microsoft Word 6.0 (doc). You send that file. The newer version of MS Word can open ".doc" files. Both MS Word and OpenOffice.org Writer can handle RealText files (".rtf"). I think selecting "Save As" and choosing RTF is the best option. Even that cruddy Korean word processor can handle RTF.

On your end, if you wish to open a ".doc" or ".docx" file, you open the file directory that the file is in, right click on the file, scroll to Open With, scroll to Choose Default Program, and select "Open With OpenOffice.org Writer. Be sure to check the box in the lower left of the splash window for "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". Do that for both ".doc" and ".docx" files and then you just have to double-click on the files when you want to launch them in OpenOffice.

*I put it that way because I've had the unfortunate experience of receiving far too many files in the wrong format, but with the correct extension apparently. The author simply used the rename function in the file directory and added the extension. That doesn't work. Let the computer do the computer stuff.

Thank you for taking the time to explain everything!
