Everyone says that if you want to meet new peeps you got to drag yourself down to a bar. Well I did it and boy was it interesting. I went to bars in a foreign country very bravely on my own and other times with people.

WRONG!

all I meet were white dudes who wanted to kill me and Korean chicks who probably heard the $$$ sound the second I walked in the door.

Not to worry. Thanks to the internet and groups that organize via the net I'm having a great time and meeting lots of cool GENUINE people but I wish people would stop recommending bars to people as the place to go.

So am I right or wrong? Have you hit the bars on your own in Korea? What was your experience?

Thanks for the heads up. I thought I had met dozens of cool, fun, easygoing people in bars but I guess I must be mistaken.

I edited my post before you posted this so as to make it less depressingly negative and down.

But you know it's a touchy topic to talk about without upsetting some people.

So you think going out alone is a good idea. Why did it work for you do you think?

Fair enough Wink Personally I've never gone out alone as I'd find it very uncomfortable, but I've met a lot of cool people who do go out alone and introduced themselves to me. If I worked alone (waygookin-wise) though I guess I'd have no choice - online groups look great for places like Seoul and Busan but as far as I can tell smaller cities like mine have no such communities.

Met some of the best friends I ever had in bars or clubs. Closet friend I've ever had I met in line waiting for a club.

Also, korean gold diggers don't hit on foreigners. They aim much higher (samsung exec, lawyer, doctor, etc.). They don't hear $$$ for hagwon monkeys.

Well, I think a good chunk of the K-Broads think upon seeing a white fellow, "cha-ching, if I play my cards right, I won't have to spend as much money at the ABC Academy for the next few months." In that sense, they do see $$$.

white guys do not date K girls who already have children. What the hell are you talking about. I'm talking about a stupid 22 year old who comes here and the first weekend alone he walks into a bar. A girl comes on to him hard.

20 years later

He inherited a farm worth 20 million Euros. A gay uncle you never even meet gave it all to you. But through the courts she gets all of it.

See how it works now. You think you come her worth nothing but whatever your parents have now. Some of it will be yours soon and more.

To clarify, there are chicks in their 20's that want to improve their English.

If you can spot a gold digger fairly early on there's opportunity to have some fun at her expense. When I lived in Taiwan it seemed like it was a mining convention, I'd play a game called I am getting what I want, you're not getting anything. Mind you, I was in my early 20s at the time so I had a certain mindset.

I was going to give this thread a serious response until I realized it was essentially a drunken back and forth.

Going by yourself to a bar is wonderful but you need to find a decent bar. The Wolfhound or Thursday Party aren't decent bars.

Even though this is Korea, there are many alternative bars where you can meet more open-minded, friendly people (Korean and foreign) who thoroughly enjoy meeting others.

There is a pretty big perception that teachers are economic mercenaries/refugees. If you tell people your an English teacher...nobody is impressed or surprised(they may feign it). Few believe your here to experience Korean culture before going back to a fortune 500 company.

Koreans do have inheritance in the form of land. Alot of rich folks who invested in land or buildings in the 70-80's are super rich.

Second, gold diggers usually go to Korean night clubs....not bars or western style night clubs. I don't think you've met many... There is a heirarchy that goes down to gyopos followed by socially retarded engineers at the bottom. A foreigner with a non-teaching job is attractive but tough to bring home to dad(who ironically might be pushing her to be a gold digger anyway).
