|
|
I recently started working at a shipping company, and part of my job is to teach the seafarers. I know little to nothing about maritime English, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of any easily accessible resources online for the classroom? So far I've found:
http://mareng.utu.fi/
and
http://www2.kaiyodai.ac.jp/~takagi/mei/english/index.html
any other links/ideas would be appreciated too, thanks! |

Odd you would consider this issue after you got hired as you now have less time to deal with it!
Still, did you check out some of the technical schools or colleges who train merchant marine sailors? Perhaps there are resources on their respective sites?
For example:
http://www.sunymaritime.edu/
OrL
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_maritime_colleges
Seriously this was just from a 30 seconds google search with proper key words...I am sure you can get lots more with more time and research.
How long do you have before you need to start teaching this terminology? |

Its' not odd in the least, I don't start teaching until next month. Why do people always assume that posters just post on Dave's and give up? Of course i'm looking elsewhere, google doesn't shut down after it detects a post in the job forums. |

I did provide two links I was just curious as to why you would get to this issue now rather than before when you had more time.
Good luck to you and that wiki list can be a decent starting point I hope. |

When did I state I had more time previously than I do now? Are you just looking for an angle from which you can feel superior? Why did you even post in this thread? |

Not looking for any angle here. I was genuinely curious because your OP stated: I recently started working at a shipping company, and part of my job is to teach the seafarers. I know little to nothing about maritime English, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of any easily accessible resources online for the classroom?
That just seemed to indicate you had not considered this issue prior to "just starting" teaching there, hence the "when you had more time comment" I made. More time in the sense of BEFORE actually starting to work there. Must be me thats confused.
I posted a couple of links to hopefully get you started or provide a bit of help but hey if you want to get all aggressive and confrontational, go for it matee (see nautical term right there). |

Here's a interesting little tidbit: at the the interview I was told it was not necessary to know anything about maritime terms, and that I could learn on the job. How about that huh? |

Of course the OP is going to get a little confrontational...you were confrontational...if you are going to take a couple of jabs at someone then expect them to jab back.
Jab 1....

Odd you would consider |
...in other words...that is not how I would have done it...basically you are telling the poster that he has made some mistake that you would not have made...you are questioning his ability to do his job...
Jab 2...

...in other words...you are not even trying to do your job; you are just asking other people to do your work for you...you are questioning his work ethic...
Why the two jabs? You could have just added your links and wished him well.
And pretending to be 'just curious' is just disingenuous... |

Homer is an ethically superior being, and will waste no opportunity to display this superiority. |

Then you should have said that in your OP huh?
huh?
huh????
Jesus Christ are you ever sensitive.
As for Ethics (your other post directed at me) I am not superior to anyone and never claimed to be.
I never worked at a Maritime insitution so I was CURIOUS.
Now you choose to take this like some insult, thats your deal sailor.
Carry on..and in the spirit of your posts (insults) I suggest you read Patrick O'Brian's brilliant 20 novel series on the British Navy of the Napoleonic wars. It is chock full of maritime technical terms about saild, jibs, masts, storms, knots, splices, anchors...could help you out greatly.
You should also check out Pirates of the Carabean, especially the first one. Pay CLOSE attention to the characters played by J, Depp and G. Rush...pick up the lingo and use it!
PS: As I always do when someone brings up my old and deceased username (Homer): yep that was my username up to 2008. I was also modding as theDude for a time and that was killed in 2008 too. Thats all in my info under my username.

Thanks for partially quoting me Scott. thats really representing what I said and not taking a bit out of context to stand on its own as you then interpret it for others.
Well done sir.

Passive aggressive jabs and cutesy laughy icons. Have at it, but you're transparent. |
