|

I was thinking of working for EPIK but then came across ADEC which hires teachers to teach in Abu Dhabi schools for 5X the salary. Why do people choose EPIK over ADEC if the salaries are that good? Is Korea that great of a place or is it because the Middle East is just too out of control right now?
Here's the link for the ADEC recruitment:
http://www.caneducom.com/licensed-teaching-lt-faculty/
According to the post they are looking for 850 new teachers
2,300- 20,400 AED, depending on experience and credentials (approximately USD3350-$5500 or CAD4000-CAD6300)
Health insurance (according to employer policy) for self, spouse and up to 3 dependent children (aged 18 years of age or less, and who have a valid residency permit.
one -way economy air ticket will be provided for the LT spouse and up to 3 dependent children aged 18 years or less, when joining ADEC and leaving to the location at the end of contract.
In addition, LTs annual leave, return economy tickets will be provided for travel between Abu Dhabi and an agreed upon other location.
just listing a few.... EPIK wants me to buy the stupid plane ticket
That was actually a recruiter's web page:

Maybe because Korea is more westernised and there'll be less culture shock. |

United Arab Emirates I've heard is quite westernized. They have night clubs and you can drink and you can wear what you like for the most part and you can drive without restrictions. Of course Saudi Arabia is another story.
By throwing it out there I realize other people can compete with my application which is fine. In return, I hope to learn why I should take an EPIK contract when I get paid and compensated a bundle more elsewhere. |

If you think you'll enjoy life out in the UAE then you should go for it. I'm sure everyone has their own reasons for choosing Korea. Maybe some people really love K-Pop or kimchi. |

If you don't mind living in an Muslim country, then its fine.
Personally, I can imagine nothing worse than living in the ME. If you are a man or an older woman I can see it being okay. But for younger women they might find it rather uncomfortable. Also, I'm sure the ability to get a girlfriend might be a concern for some young men out there.
It's not my cup of tea to be honest but I older folk who have done it and enjoy being ou there. |

Well, the EPIK program doesn't seem to discriminate by sex. I noticed that some jobs are open only to women which II think sets a bad pretext. Unfortunately, I have good number of school loans I have to pay back so the extra money is attractive despite the societal setbacks that you mention. |

For the website link they seem to be looking for people who are licensed to teach which many who come to Korea are not. |

Most of the people coming to work in public schools here are not licensed teachers.
(approximately USD3350-$5500 or CAD4000-CAD6300)
How is that 5x the Epik salary?

A lot of the people who come to Korea are single guys who might want to visit night clubs where you can at least meet a girl who isn't a foreign prostitute.
Rich Arab countries suit a lot of people with families but having worked in one for a while, you'll probably have to put up with a lot of Muslim arrogance, attempts to convert you, limitations on what you can do or talk about in lessons etc....not for everyone. |

The UAE salary is not x5 EPIK.
Dubai is not Westernised.
This thread is pointless, but it's a good advert for the recruitment company, if you believe what this guy says. |

First of all it's not 5x not even close. About 2x or a little more depending on qualifications and credentials which brings me to my next post.
That is strictly for experienced licensed teachers (licensed in your home country).
If you have experience and a teaching license then you can get a job there (maybe).
Most people who come here have neither. And most people who have experience here do not have a license.
And both are needed for a job with ADEC.

I don't want to live in a flat desert with nothing but sand.
BTW the salary is nowhere near 5x as much. |

Dubai is a nice place to fly through but a hell to work in.
There is a reason they pay what they do - it is the only way they can get licensed teachers.
Qualifications: All Licensed Teacher candidates must possess the following qualifications:
1. A Bachelor, Master or Doctoral Degree from an accredited university
2. A current Teaching License issued through a state, province or federal educational licensing authority. Either the license or the degree must reflect considerable study of education pedagogy.
OR
3. A PGCE or PGDE, plus a current Teaching License issued through a state, province or federal educational licensing authority.
The VAST majority of NETs in Korea have little more than a generic BA and willingness to travel. They wouldn't even make the short list never mind get a job in Dubai.
IF you hold valid credentials it is an OK place to park, bank your coin and leave (again, there is a reason they need to pay well and it is not the high quality western lifestyle).
If you are the average newbie, fresh out of uni, an economic refugee from the states with no prospects at home and no qualifications to do anything else, then EPIK works.
Even Korea is not high on the list of preferred places for EFL teachers when it comes to lifestyle - unless, of course, they want/need the cash to pay down their student loans. Thailand pays newbies 1/2 what Korea does and has twice as many people working there as "English teachers".
I think that you will find that, as salaries go up, working conditions go down.
If you hold a PhD, are published and have presented at multiple conferences then you can ignore the above and pick the job you want in academia.

UAE is like ESL Shangri La. It must be the most competitive market to get into, with the highest qualifications required. I've known people with master's degrees who couldn't get an interview.
Best of luck! |

Comparing programs/organizations within the same country makes sense. Comparing them between 2 different countries doesn't make sense at all. Each person has their own reason for going to the country they choose, and it doesn't have to revolve around money. |
