when they have to deal with attitudes like this......

In todays Chosun Ilbo they are wondering why has the highest rate of unmarried women in the world over 30.

Here are some tasty soundbites

The Title for a start:

Quote:
Single Women a Growing Problem

Kim Young-chul, a researcher at the KDI

Quote:
As long as women adhere to the traditional attitude that their husbands must be better off than they are in all areas, it will be difficult for them to find anyone to marry

Nice. Its clearly nothing to do with the massive elephant in the corner of the room then, is it? It is because of all those vast salaries that Korean women are getting and the bad attitude the money gives them!!!!

Just saw that 5 minutes ago and was about to post it up here....

Awful choice of title, must be said.

But later the writer changes to just the term, 'singles', and not just putting the blame on women for the low birth-rate......allow some of the people he/she quotes do!!

Maybe more Korean women would be attracted to marriage if it didn't basically equate to indentured servitude to their husband's family...

It should have said ".......although some of the people he/she quotes do!"

My wife's family asks me through her.

"Is she keeping the house clean?"
"Is she being a good wife?"
"Does she do her duty?"

In the beginning I said, well she has a job so she shouldn't have to do everything, then they yell at her.

Now I say yes, she does the dishes, cleans the house and is damn obedient, and no back talk, they love'd the fact she is a good wife.

People in North America are not getting married so much anymore even though Western women don't have the same issues to deal with as Korean women.

Maybe they don't want to marry for the same reasons it seem many of us don't want to marry?

Its mostly pressure to conform. There aren't many wealthy, influential single women (Oprah, Suze Orman, etc.) giving young Korean females a new personality to emulate.

The REAL problems are the attitudes of employers and outdated laws in Korea. Unless women work for a large company or the government, women will be at a huge disadvantage getting married and an even bigger disadvantage if you then have kids. Many companies will not even consider a married women, or god forbid, a woman with kids because they consider that her energies will not be fully focused on work. So women don't get married. On another tack. If the woman works at a large corporation or the government, she will have benefits like maternity leave and a guarantee of her job when she returns. However, she will still have to do most of the housework and then pay huge sums of money for the kids upbringing and education. So women don't get married.

For a country so hell bent on their national identity, they certainly are not doing a lot to preserve it. Unless birth rates increase, Koreans will become almost extinct. Of course they can import wives and husbands, but then that puts an end to this "identity", doesn't it.

I have no sympathy.

I don't feel sorry for Korean women because their standards are too high. They all want the rich guy they see in all the Korean dramas. They want the guy to tell them they don't gotta work another day in their entire life and that their husbands will buy them expensive luxury brands like Prada and Chanel.

I used to feel sorry for Korean women what with the inequality and all, and then I realized that Korean men have it far worse. The forced military service. And then when they get married they have extreme pressure to bring home the dough. Most Korean men I know say that their wives treat them like ATM machines and constantly complain that they don't make enough money. Thats the guys who were lucky enough to get a job at a big company. Lesser men have it harder or will have difficulty even finding a wife. And if they do land that chaebol gig, they get to look forward to insane hours and forced drinking sessions. And then they are forced to retire in their mid forties, right when they need income the most for college and kids wedding expenses. Don't envy Korea men at all.
