wow! what a difference a year makes. That contract is a full 300,000 less per month than last year's AND the overtime pay rate fell too!
On the good side, you get full vacation so you can work a 3 week camp in January make 3.0mil enjoy six weeks of vacation and then do the same in the summer. I made an additional 10 mil working 12 weeks during vacation last year and I still had 10 weeks to enjoy on the beach in the Philippines.
Still, 2.35.....Uni contracts are getting worse.... |

No doubt about it. They are getting worse.
Look at it this way. You're extra 10 million sounds great.
Until you realize that your annual income was under 25 million after taxes.
Even with all the extra work, these jobs are paying MA people basic hagwon wages. |

Is that the instructor pay or the content prof pay?

| For those interested, the salary on the contract was around 2.35 per month plus the .30 housing allowance mentioned. Overtime pay was 14,000 won/hour. |
Where did you hear this? I interviewed with Dong A and they offered me a job. I was told that we will make 2.5 (30mil a year) + 350,000 for housing. That's what the ad says too. I asked about the Type 2 (9 hour a week) position but I goes that doesn't exist anymore. |

I agree that the uni jobs are getting worse and paying hagwon wages but you're still only working 7 MONTHS! If I can make 3.0 mil (2.67 + 350 housing) a month for 12 mos. and only work 9 hours a week for 7 mos. I'll take that all day long. Like I said earlier everone's needs/wants are different.
For what it's worth, I ended up leaving Dong-A mid contract to go back into business. Somedays I think I should have kept the job but I like doing as I please and answering to myself. |

| Those were the numbers on the sample contract they showed me. I don't know if it was a mistake on their part or what (the sample contract was actually the contract of another teacher who had signed), but that's what it said. The overtime pay wasn't listed on the contract, however; that's just what I was verbally told it was. |

Why not contact the person in charge if hiring there? That would give you the most accurate answer no? |

They're now offering 2.5 plus 350 for housing for teaching 9 hours. Anyone have any updated info about working there?
A friend of mine has an interview on Thursday. I've heard they let half the teachers go each semester due to student evals but that's only in theory not in practice. Is overtime still 14? |

Zappa,
I too would have turned it down. Of course, for those just looking to get a uni job it certainly is an improvement over any hagwon or p.s. job as it is hard to beat 4-5 mos. paid vacation. |
16 WEEK SEMESTERS PLUS TWO WEEKS AFTER TERM PAPER WORK AND ONE WEEK PRE TERM PAPER WORK BEFORE FOR A TOTAL OF 14 WEEKS VACATION A YEAR. REAL NUMBERS . ALSO CONSIDER -NO NATIONAL HOLIDAYS AT UNIVERSITIES EITHER. OF COURSE THE PAY AT UNIVERSITIES IS LOW AS WELL.
IF ANYONE IS ON THE TEACHERS PENSION - AND- THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE SYSTEM LESS THAN FIVE YEARS OR HAVE LESS THEN FIVE YEARS OF MONEY IN THE TEACHERS SYSTEM THEN IT IS FAIR TO DEDUCT 200 K A MONTH FROM YOUR SALARY BECAUSE YOU DON'T GET SEVERANCE RATHER YOU JUST GET THE MONEY THAT WAS PAID IN. (UNLESS YOUR SCHOOL PAYS SEVERANCE THEN YOU CAN DEDUCT THIS)
LAST "CONTACT HOURS" IS/ARE IRRELEVANT. WHAT COUNTS IS TOTAL WORK COMPARED TO SALARY. IF YOUR CONTRACT SAYS 12 HOURS BUT YOU ARE DOING LOTS OF CORRECTING AND ADMINISTRATIVE WORK THEN THE 12 'CONTACT " HOURS MEANS PRETTY MUCH ZERO
SINCE AIR FARE ISN'T PAID EITHER. TEACHERS MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER DEDUCTING THAT AS WELL . |

| You have to make them up at most schools. If a class is canceled then it needs to be made up. This is ins't by itself any sort of deal breaker or big problem but it is just one more thing that ought to be added when you consider how much vacation time you get at a Korean University. |

Okay, I get it now. True, one of the unis I worked at did require that. Fortunately, my current place does not. |

Ok. I found out the overtime in the freshman English department is only 14,000. If you can get work in other departments it's 50,000. You will probably have to work a couple hours of OT in teaching freshman English though. It's an entry level position but one of there better ones in Busan. If you can move to another department then all the better
Some teachers have to teach past 6pm.
They used to fire 50% of their teachers but due to complains about that horrible rule they now have a way around it. Even if you have lowish evals as long as you teach at least 50 extra hours during the year you're renewed.
Most people are easily able to get overtime and classes during breaks but neither is required. |
