If it weren't for some significant Christians in my life, I would have left this place a long time ago. It's a great place to grow spiritually and a large part of that has to do with learning to deal with difficulties and the weird expectations that we find within ourselves and the other people here.

Having said that, I've decided to head home for awhile. I'm not worried or anxious about finding a job or anything like that because I know that God has a plan. I might not know what it is just yet, but I know that it's going to be pretty great.

Like ! Very Happy

It doesn't matter what religion you have, being positive is like an MP3 full of your best music on a crowded bus in rush hour.

Or if authorities use the entity's name to enslave you mind, body, and soul.

I had a bad(ish) afternoon yesterday.

I went to a restaurant and ordered a fish dinner the other day. The adjuma shooed me away and said 'NO SANDWICHHEEE YOGI! nO SANDWICHEE, NO BURGAH.'

I explained in korean that I wanted the makrel set menu with rice and miyuk guk.

She started laughing and showed me a picture menu. I replied again that I understood and knew what I wanted and then ordered it again.

She kept double checking that that is what I wanted and I got so pissed that I started muttering out loud enough for people to hear

"Look mofo, I don't want a damned sandwich ffs, I want ___________. I told you in Korean already, just cook it you moron.' In English...'

I know it was childish, but even after 7 years here and KNOWING why they act like they do and she didn't mean to insult me, it still makes me fume at times.

She repeated the meal once more to check and I wacved her away and said ' ne, hangul mal aliyo.'

Then when I'd eaten she and her friends started pissing themselves laughing and screaming out 'ALIYO, ALIYO HA HA ALIYO!' In a ridiculous voice.

Man....

Well they just lost a repeat customer who would've spent at least man won a week there and I'll now be eating at a place up the street that has the same meal for 1.5k more (better quality anyway.)

I know an old adjuma in that situation don't mean to consciously insult us, it's just that their culture doesn't teach them how to interact with us or that we even have feelings etc, I truly believe that because otherwise she should've been scared about the possible recriminations of insulting a fully grown man like that in public - but the fact is it probably never even occured in her mind that she was doing anything rude.

But yeah I was kind of livid after a while and walked out muttering to anyone in earshot 'no point bothering learning the sodding language when they wont take you speaking it seriously anyway.'

I don't know why but I found this amusing, even though I'm sure it would annoy me too. Maybe you can take some solace that that woman really knows no better, and deserves your pity.

Ah man, apologies for the doubletap. But I'm pretty sure some of us get into a routine of where we eat. I know I do. Every time I go to the one restaurant up the road from my office, they know what I want to order and exactly how to do it up (which is no mushrooms). In my experience, Korean office workers tend to stampede a place for like a month and then forget it exists.

Well, I'll be in this city for at least a year. Man won times 52 weeks = 520,000k they wont be earning from me.

What's the difference between a foreigner who eats at the same restaurant at least once a week, or a Korean? I see plenty of Koreans eating alone during their dinner breaks at the local Korean restaurants. It's the same man won.

I've been in my neighborhood for two and a half years, and plan on staying a year and a half more. That's a lot of money that the restaurant down the street isn't getting from me and my husband. We go to one a good 15 minute walk from home, and get great service, because we're regulars. First (and sometimes second, if you're willing to try again) impressions are important.

there is a reason that foreigners come here, were allowed to save so much money and its tax free. if they didnt have that, alot of people wouldnt come here, no?

the powers that be know that

i like Korea, ive been here for 11 years, made alot of cash, but work is largely difficult, unless there is a powerful boss who is there to control everything. ive been at a place for like 7 years, and we have such a boss, but when shes not there, it instantly starts in pettiness and bitchiness. Sometimes as soon as she walks out the door! Its all they know how to do, mostly. The thing the people here want is not money or freedom, its power and status. Whether its speaking English in a loud voice to show off to others or using condescending langauge to another, its all to fill a desire to be powerful or respected.

in the west, largely, we look at each others characters and accomplishments.

here, alot of times, they look at position, family, and household.

its all from being between two asian giants and being invaded all the time, even now (i say the English teacher onslaught is the 4th invasion)

so, I put that into perspective.

Im talked down to by young 20-25 year olds all the time at work and it f+++s me off to no end. But, the boss keeps me there and pays me a grand wage for a reason.

but yes, I think most people are getting a negative vibe from Koreans, they have for a while now.

oh well

good thing i noticed there are alot of young ladies (coming from me, a guy) who arent fitting into this mold theyre parents having made, and theyre fighting to develop themselves, date western guys, and buck the whole system, living as outsiders, but with great English skills, hobbies, and their own money...
