I stopped reading after I hit the down arrow on my screen and the next post didn't appear.

Probably could have condensed that into like 2 paragraphs.

Maybe, but if you were actually considering working there, I'll bet you'd be glad to see that someone went into that much detail.

I really appreciate your post. I was thinking of applying for this job but your well-thought out criticisms made me think otherwise. I believe this is what ESL Cafe should be used for.

Honestly, I think the guy at the cafe spiked my coffee. When I finally looked up from the computer, it was three hours later and all that text was staring me in the face. I thought about editing it but I didn't see the point. The post is for people who are thinking about working there. I figured any such person would appreciate the details and could spare the ten minutes to read it.

I've just been informed: It seems that SWELL has changed it's name. Once again they are advertising for new teachers, but now under the name Division of General Education (Language Education Center) : English Education

So, be informed.

According to the announcement, they're requesting higher qualifications this time around. That's good for the teachers' obligations to the students and the department. I wonder if the department's obligations to the teachers are similarly improved.

Why did you post on this thread a link that is THIS thread? And then if you reread that one when you get to this post again you can click on the link etc. over and over forever. Shocked Very Happy

Most surprising to me was the administrations awareness of the problem (many teachers have noted it) and their lack of inclination to address it..

You are clearly a smart and competent teacher edh- good post.

Unfortunately while the quality of applicants working in Korea has improved radically over the past 3 years, employers here have not bothered to correspondingly improve their conditions and work environments.

Curious if anyone can attest to what is going on at SWELL now... They are currently hiring for a whopping 1.7 m per month. There is evidently overtime which puts most teachers at a more usual rate.. But there is quite a bit of vagueness about when overtime will be scheduled, and how much will be required. Also, about what added responsibilities there may be. Any feedback from current or recent profs would be appreciated.

Why should employers care? Or bother?

The supply of under-employed over-educated westerners with useless BAs, MAs and PhDs is at an all time high.

The employers have the power in this situation, not you.

Consider yourself lucky you're even getting 1.7...

Not only that but the administration treats the foreign staff badly. (Mandatory extra unpaid work not in contract, etc.) I just read about this on Facebook. So yeah, it's still a terrible place to work, maybe more so than ever. Who are the people signing up to do this?

I see the biggest post on here that has garnered all the responses is from 7 years ago. Is there any info from more recent or current teachers regarding this workplace? Thanks in advance.

I was big units in Seoul for over a decade. This is a common story.

At HUFS, you sign a contract and a month later, they demand you sign a new one at a lower salary. If you don't re-sign, you aren't re-newed the following year.

Sejong has been successfully sued a couple of times. Konkuk as well.

SNU is pure garbage.

My advice is you sign your contract and keep all pay stubs. For example, if you do OT you will be paid very low. When you leave, you make a claim at the labor board and you will get your money. This happened at SNU.

I'd be interested to know what rationales behind a single-gender university in 21st century Korea people have heard of.
