I am going to be moving back to the U.S this summer and am flying into JFK-new York. I am taking my cat home with me and am hoping someone here could tell me where to start, what's involved, tips, ANY information pleaseeee.

My cat and I have been to Korea and back a couple of times. In fact, we just arrived home today...not sure if we will return or not.

When you purchase your ticket, or once you have purchased your ticket, call the airline to make a reservation to have your cat travel in the cabin with you. Usually they tell you that the cat and carrier should weigh less than 5 Kilos in order to ride in the cabin. Most cat's are close to this, or smaller.

They will want to know the dimensions of your carrier to make sure that it fits under the seat. In my experience, a soft sided carrier is better than a plastic one because there's sometimes less room under the seats than what they tell you. With a plastic carrier, there's no room for error. You can line the carrier with an old towel, or use one of those puppy pee pads that they sell at E-mart. Make sure to carry an extra towel or liner so that you can change it at least once during the trip. It's going to get soiled and you won't want to live with that smell for long.

Make sure that she has her rabies shot at least 30 days before you leave, and then on your day of departure take the record with you to the airport and be sure to get there in plenty of time for your flight. You will need to visit the animal quarantine office to fill out a form and get some kind of document from them. It costs 10,000 Won.

Can someone clear up the 30-day rabies shot thing for me? Does this mean the cat has to have shots done sometime during the 30 days prior to your trip, or does it mean the shots must have been done at least 30 days before the trip, but longer than that is OK.

Maybe it's a massive brain fart, but I'm having trouble comprehending the wording they use to explain the 30 days.

My cat already has its rabies shots (I have the documentation) and I would prefer not having to pay for another set if I don't have to.

As long as the shot is 30 days old you're good. But if I'm not mistaken you don't even need it for cats.
