Quote:
Standing in line outside Mies Container, Gangnam's hottest and perhaps most oddly named new restaurant, I couldn't help marveling.
Around nine out of ten of the customers queuing around the building were young women in their 20s.

When a good-looking young waiter with a hip-hop scarf tied around on his head appeared and called out in a booming voice that a table for five was available, I began to understand why so many women were waiting in line.

And indeed, most of the rumors about Mies Container are about the restaurant's young, hot, male waiters and the "macho" atmosphere, which has proven to be a hit with the impatient young Seoulites who would never wait the 30 minutes in line anywhere else.

Interesting concept. I remember walking by this place a month ago and was surprised at the long line to get in. I thought the place just had good food. After seeing that article, I realize the REAL reason why so many people were waiting outside.

So a guy wearing cargo pants, an orange t-shirt and a white bandana is setting the girls' panties aflame?

Damn, I need to go shopping at Lotte, like right now....

I think it's just because it's targeted towards women, not that they men there are some exceptional species of macho.

Like, Kgirls love Mr. Pizza just because of their "Love for women" tag. Women here have been looked over and treated as second class for so long, when things get made especially for them, they swoon.

Korea is one of the most male-dominated societies in the modern industrialized world. Most ESL teachers are guys, so we don't really see it day-to-day. But women here have a "place" and they are expected to stay in it. Which is why they dress more modest than they probably would want, they aren't socially allowed to smoke in public, and in social and public settings are expected to be seen and not heard. "Just sit in the corner and look gorgeous while me and my buddies drink shots of soju till we can't walk and get loud and rude to everyone else."

I remember some ex Kgfs of mine saying that dating a foreigner was getting a blast of freedom. Korean men expect their Kgfs to act as obedient wives. At the end of the date, they expect women to just go home and comb their hair or whatever. While the men can then go to pink rooms and nail pros till sunrise. Men tell them what they should wear, what to eat, where to go. It's like taking a huge century step backward.

If there was ever a country that needed a women's lib movement, it's this one.

Well to be clear, you'd need a "hip hop scarf" and a "booming voice" to really hit it off. In other words, dress wack and scream your head off; if that don't bring em I don't know what does. No wonder the service staff was annoying; their schtick is geared toward women (kinky phrase). The manliness was a bit fake and overdone but then I guess they aren't catering to men.

Apparently they have a "high 5" policy as well. The waiter was yelling at us that our table was ready and was waving at the top of the stairs. Turns out it was a high five and I left him hanging. He made a sad face. Better to try to high five when someone is near you, not when they are at the bottom of the stairs. After we sat, another waiter explained to us that it was a policy and that I could go ahead and high five him now.

Food there is good for western food in Korea, if you like an average tasting salad with a pound of spaghetti thrown in. The pan pizza is better though. You'll definitely go home full.

I don't disagree with your point, but do you think it's better for women to feel pressure to cover up (to a reasonable degree), or reveal themselves (to a reasonable degree)?

I think it's best for women to feel that they could do either, depending on what they want.

I wouldn't say that Korean women are conservative in their dress, at least not nowadays. I saw a good portion of a girl's bum hanging out of her hot pants and another girl I saw was only wearing a man's dress shirt..no pants. Coming back to Canada has made me really aware of how short my dresses and skirts are that I can't even wear them to work without feeling inappropriate. I do think that apart from the fashion, it's still very much a boy's club in Korea, though.

But for every pair of hotpants, there are a dozen Beautiful Broads in Boring Blouses.

Silly alliteration aside, tons of nice looking post-college girls dress really conservatively. So much fabric about the shoulders.
