Right, I've dusted down the crystal ball and placed it on my desk. I'm giving it a rub, here goes.....
"I see a canny Yugoslavian tactical genius of a coach with an amazing track record of turning around non-achieving national teams (and minnows) in world soccer and his name is.....I can see a name through the foggy haze....wait....ah! Yes! Bora Milatinovic!"
The Korean Football Federation could do a lot worse than give that guy a call IMHO. |
Aye, a nae bad track record:
1986 World Cup: Mexico coach
1990 World Cup: Costa Rica coach ( damn you...)
1994 World Cup: USA coach
1998 World Cup: Nigeria coach
2002 World Cup: China coach
Currently coaching Honduras and he has a contract until 2006, but apparently the Honduran FA are struggling to pay him his wages. |

Holyjoe, put it this way. He'd get the Red Devils qualified for Germany 2006 which would at least save Daehan Minguk from the face damage of being one of the few WC semi finalists that fails to qualify for the next WC.
Bora's a nomad, a kind of short term miracle worker who takes teams to the realistic limits of their capabilities (but really Nigeria 1998 had the promise to go further than WC round 2 I feel), then moves on. If the KFF did appoint him I hope they wouldn't embugger him with absurd expectations but show some wisdom and realise the extremely high calibre of tactician he is. All hypothetical anyhow eh ?
Failing that, perhaps the domestic league and Ian Porterfield at the Pusan Icons would be a possibility (having at least knowledge of K soccer)? Or Terry Venables ? No, on second thoughts that wouldn't be remotely funny from Korea's point of view! |

I'd advise against Ian Porterfield... but then I'm prejudiced because he wrecked my beloved club
Apparently the KFA have confirmed that 10 foreign coaches have applied for the job so far, including:
John Toshack (aye, he gets around)
John Duncan (former Chesterfield boss who took them to the FA Cup semis)
Senol Gunes (Turkey 2002 coach)
Bruno Metsu
Aime Jacquet
Roger Lemerre
John Duncan it is, then! |

Wow. I never thought that the team would not make it to the next World Cup. Imagine if they were eliminated from World Cup contention next year? Oh there would just be a tad of crying I think. |

If South Korea don't make it to the World cup I don't think it would be on TV.
You know once the country isn't in something interest drops right off. |

Well, 'Big Ron' is now available if he fancies making a return to management and a few quid overseas, those he'll have to watch his words!

Now I've got far too much time on my hands thinking up such deliciously improbable, surreal scenes as Ron Atkinson giving post match briefings to to the Korean media.
Donga Ilbo Reporter: Congratulations Mr. Atkinson on a fine victory for our glorious national team tonight. We did really well. In particular, Mr. Ahn's splendid hat-trick was the highlight don't you think?
Atkinson: Well fair play to the lad, I've been giving Chon Wannee stick something awful in training lately but he hit the back of the onion bag three times. When he gets into those kind of positions the dig on him's unbelivable. He gives it a good welly, a real wack their lad in goal can't hold. And his third goal was top drawer, doing the lollipop, taking their full back to the cleaners and giving it a full dig. Now gentlemen it's a game of two halves, a team of 11 players and you've got to score goals to win and the referee's a pillock. Good night gentlemen and please don't call me at home while The Sweeny 's on.
Donga Ilbo Reporter: ΰ...?
Yeah, there's no excuse I know but you have to dream don't you? |
