| Yet, oddly enough I have been doing exactly that for 30 years and have nver had an umbrella which I left in this method, soak me with water! |

| I find that when I don't let my umbrellas dry in this open fashion, the seams leak and the metal hinges/joints rust. |

| opening the umbrella allows it to dry thoroughly and prevents the underneath wires from rusting prematurely--like a closed wet umbrella does. You guys are idiots. |

Oh god, I'm not sure I can handle my 5000 won umbrella prematurely rusting after only 6 months of usage!
Anyway excuse me while I take my socks to the tailor. I've seen a few small holes that need stitching up post haste! |

Umbrellas dry better when left open. One may choose to buy cheap umbrellas and not worry about their longevity.
Regarding the OP's use of the term "bad luck", I think that OP was probably referring to a perceived lack of safety rather than a superstition, but that is conjecture.
I am guessing that the area in question is small and marble, so I can understand the safety concern: the marble would get slick and the umbrellas make walking difficult and irksome.
At least that's my take on the whole thing. |

Some people have higher standards than you. I got my umbrella from NYC at the MoMA. It cost quite a but more than 5,000w and I have to say I've never seen that same umbrella in Korea, EVER.
So, I would like to take care of it because a 5,000w umbrella gotten off of the street isn't going to replace it.
You go ahead and buy cheap crap, have it break and buy more cheap crap. You get what you pay for. |

Exactly, and I'm sure the kids with their open umbrellas littering elementary school hallways are likewise 5000 won piece of crap rust buckets.
A high quality umbrella probably isn't going to rust so easily from "improper drying" anyway. Aren't they designed to get wet?
ps. I didn't know the Museum of Modern Art was known for its high quality umbrellas. |

| If people want to dry their umbrella that's fine but my gripe is when they do it in a way that doesn't involve consideration of others like, putting a dozen of them in the hallway or entrance where people are trying to get through. Dry them at home for christ's sake. |

Although this is the best explanation for doing so, I don't believe
that most of the people who do this even know why they do it.
I don't believe that you do this, either.

How odd.
I do both...sometimes I dry my umbrella opened up in my office or home. Sometimes I keep it folded up and lean it against a wall. And sometimes I forget about it in one of those plastic bags.
I've found that they keep better the first way.
But by all means, call me a liar on this. If you've got proof that I never dry my umbrellas this way.... Do share.
