Tragic.

The epitome of the modern professional footballer.

It was so weird to watch him on Football Focus acting absolutely normally......then to hear he went home just a few hours after that and killed himself.

Seems so out of the blue.

I wonder why he topped himself? He seemed to be a balanced individual, but who really knows what skeletons were in his closet? I expect the tabloids will be digging around in the dirt for the next couple of weeks.

Growing up in Leeds in the early 90's, there were always rumours about Speedo's sexuality.. Matter of fact the text I got from my dad about the death was along the lines of "Bloody hell! Did you know Speedo was married?" and not about the fact that he was dead..

The rumour doing the rounds in Internet-land shortly after his death was that a tabloid "journalist" was on his doorstep Saturday night, claiming that he was to be outed in the papers.

All unconfirmed and denied by the gutter press, obviously.

Football is still a very macho, homophobic sport. It is highly unlikely that there are no gay footballers considering the thousands of players around the world. Other than Justin Fashanu (who later killed himself after being ostracized by his peers and even his own brother John), I can't think of any openly gay players.
Rugby has shown a more progressive attitude. When Gareth Thomas came out it was big news at first, but then the shock soon faded and everyone soon realized it wasn't that big a deal.

The Amercian footballer David Testo came out fairly recently, too.

I can think of few sports as effeminate as soccer.

Some of the players give asian ladyboys a good run for their money.

Though I have few doubts it is indeed homophobic...the whole protesting too much thing. Wink

hmm...my apologies for the above post.
In very poor taste considering the topic of this thread.

Never heard of the guy either...but my sympathies to his family and loved ones.

I suppose you like "macho" sports like American "Football" (basically Rugby with forward passes and body-armour), Basketball (a non-contact game played by girls in the UK.. We call it "netball) and Baseball (again, played by children without gloves and crash-helmets and called "Rounders" where I'm from)?

Unless, of course you're an anitpodean-type..

I don't get this attitude at all, although you hear it a lot from Americans/Canadians/Australians etc...Football is a contact sport and therefore you are far more likely to get serious injuries, especially to knees, ankles feet etc... than many other sports such as tennis, golf, gymnastics and the like. Don't you guys realise that when a player gets tackled heavily and he rolls around on the floor he is trying to win a free kick or a penalty and is not really injured or being effeminate as you seem to think? I would have thought it was obvious. Have a go at soccer if you think there are too many cheats and people pretending to be injured and I might agree with you, but calling soccer players effeminate or like ladyboys is massively innacurate.
