Is this normal? I don't see why they wouldn't just ask for my passport, seemed a little strange. I asked them why they needed my bankbook as opposed to my passport and they replied:
"The reason why I asked you for a bankbook is first to pay you and second to keep the record to ourselves."
Seems sketchy |

Dump this recruiter ASAP. Though I'm even surprised you asked, come on, why would a recruiter need a copy of your bank book details?!?!?! He doesn't pay you, the school does, and the recruiter has nothing at all to do with you after you arrived in Korea. |

One, I wouldn't post the guys info here.
Two, did you consider that maybe they're going to front you some money until you DO get paid. Plenty of folks come here and work for 4-6 weeks without getting paid. No ARC card = no bank account = no settlement allowance/paycheck.
Besides, they can only put money into your account with the info, they cannot freeze it/withdraw from it/commit any other crime with it, so what's the problem? |

all you need is your passport (with the visa page) to set up a basic deposit account now. |

They probably want your bank # to pay you later. Just photocopy the first page. It's routine here. |

Which you can't do if your passport is at immigration being processed for the ARC card. |

In my experience, some hagwons will opt to pay their teachers cash for the first month of work since you need an ARC to set up a bank account when you get here and it takes 3-4 weeks to get one after your arrival.
Definitely ask for some clarification as per the request, but I wouldn't assume the worst just yet since, as nathanrutledge said, they can't really do anything with that information alone. |

passport goes to the consulate to get your work visa (pasted inside your passport and back in your possesion before you arrive in korea).
Immigration doesn't hold onto the passport. They take photocopies. You are actually supposed to use your passport for anything official once in country until you get your ARC in the mail. |

Is this for a part-time position?
If so this is normal. Direct deposits into your bank from the recruiter. He keeps a cut of your hourly wage.
Illegal but normal if you are willing to take this route. |

Thanks for all the replies, have a much clearer idea now. I'm going to take a photocopy instead. |

I think you misunderstood him. When he said your bankbook, he wanted to copy the first page with your name, account number.
He would've taken your bankbook, made a copy and given it back to you. I don't think he wanted to keep the original.
Either way, giving him a copy of it is just as good. |
