I was just at a fast food restaurant to eat and as soon as I sat down I heard one Korean guy from a table that was diagonal to me say "F you". I sincerely thought that I had misheard him and I looked at him for a split second and there were 3 young Korean men (about 20'ish....although I didn't get a good look) staring at me.

I thought whatever, so I sat down and started eating. They then started saying "are you crazy" "you have dirty mouth". I ignored them and continued eating. After about 5 minutes they stopped, I continued to eat and I probably left about 10 minutes after they had began keeping to themselves. As I got up to leave they said nothing, I put my garbage away and that was it.

It was at about 10 PM on a Saturday night, I am a 29 year old regular looking Canadian man.

I've been in Korea for a little over 4 years and nothing even remotely ccomparable to this has ever happened to me. I do get stared at quite a bit and I get the occasional dirty look.

They just seemed to be idiots and I don't think that they were necessarily full of hatred. Having said that we all know that with 3 young men things can escalate fairly quickly so I thought that I was best to ignore them and let it go.

Any advice on how to handle this???? Would you have confronted them???

Even if you aren't outnumbered it's best to just walk away. It sucks but is it worth it to let some punks ruin your day?

I wouldnt have confronted them, just ignored them. That kind of thing can happen in any country.

Also I remember you wrote in another thread about "advice for a newbie" to walk around with a frown or scowl on your face and to look busy or preoccupied if anyone tries to talk to you. Maybe they took offense to this Smile

You did the right thing, you handled it like a real adult mature man.

If you gave into your emotions and fought them, you would be nothing but a child swayed but minor infractions.

They deserved a beating but it's not smart to be the one to give it in their country when the law is on their side

My worst: I got a lit cigarette thrown at me in a club, but the guy's buddy pushed him away and promptly ran over to apologize to my friend and I. They left shortly thereafter.

The hagwon generation has reached adulthood. They probably got conditioned to view foreigners as dancing clowns from a young age.

Many Koreans get triggered into practising their english whenever they see a foreigner. Young guys...they probably tried out their list of bad words to see if they could get a reaction. A game of dare for their amusement.

Yeah it's happened to me and I look Korean (I'm Chinese). I remember someone overheard me speaking English in a bar came over, and said "F U" and I was like "I should so sucker punch this guy, break a bottle over his head and run".

I didn't though because there was a cute Irish girl so I kept my cool and just went home.

... Never met the Irish girl again...

Sad

Excellent point. I had never thought of that before. Come to think of it, during my first few months at my hagwon I had probably been called all of the things that they called me (and much more) by my elementary students.

A teacher that they were allowed to disrespect or at least not take seriously is the only reference point for foreigners that a whole generation of kids have been exposed to ..since about 1996.

I'm no badass. I'm no thug. I don't even think I am a good fighter and I would not recommend another teacher do this but I know myself. I'd have shot the guys a 'bird'. Maybe end up in a fight. I am mentally prepared for the day when I will be asked to leave this country because I had the temerity to respond to someone starting something with me. I won't be able to shut and walk away. Just the way I grew up. I won't be able to go through life knowing someone said fck you and I did nothing about it. I won't take the first punch but I won't let it slide either. The middle finger is probably what I would do. Non verbal but very 'loud'.
Again, not advocating it for anyone. Its just how I grew up, a few times going to new schools and older brothers knowing I'd probably get picked on being the new kid, drilled it into me not to take crap from anyone.

OP, you did the right thing. I know I would have reacted differently and have in Korea and so far I've gotten away with it. Drunk ajoshis mostly, a foreigner or two. I'm a friendly guy, usually smiling and sometimes I guess taken as a sign of weakness.

just think that...

it took 3 guys to muster the balls to do such a stunt as that against 1 man (you).

they would never have the balls to do this outside of S.Korea

you did the right thing by just brushing them off. if i was in ur shoes, i wud have added a laugh as well!
