Hey guys.
I had an interview with YBM LIA Cheongdam last Thursday night and was offered the contract. I talked to a current foreign teacher and she gave me the green light on it. It's in Gangnam, the hours are 12-7, and I'd be getting 2.3 mil. It's a great job offer.
Now, I'm also in contact with this other school that's not a hagwon. It's a private elementary school in Nowon. I also talked to a former foreign teacher from that school and she said that she'd recommend it 100%. The working hours are 8:30-4:30 and the pay STARTS at 2.3. I could possibly get 2.4 or 2.5. The thing about this school is that there is 40 days vacation... and that's weekdays. YBM only offers 9, probably the whole bullshit "we offer you 9 days vacation but 4 of them are weekends" deal. I know what it's like to work your ass off in a hagwon and get no vacation. It sucks. I really want this job because of the vacation. The thing is... this guy is really slow to respond to me. It sounds like he's going to offer me the job but he just keeps asking questions about my documents and stuff but never outright says anything about the offer. It just sounds like he's interested because he's asking me about the visa.
Do you think I should just take the offer in Gangnam and say screw the other school or do you think I should wait on it? Do you think it would be totally inappropriate to let that guy know of my situation and tell him that I'd rather work for him even though I have another job offer to get him to offer me the contract faster?
I'm kind of in a bind with this. Either way I have a sweet job but I just really want the one in Nowon. |

You state that he keeps asking about your documents.
Do you have all necessary paperwork? If yes tell him that you have all the documents...but that you need a firm offer and signed contract otherwise you will have to pursue alternate employment opportunities. That puts the ball squarely in his court.
I wouldn't necessarily state outright that I have another job I'm waiting on...I'd phrase it a little more diplomatically as above. |

| Thanks. That's a good idea. I told him that I sent off my fingerprints last week. The job isn't until March so if there are no delays I will have my visa in time. |

| Are you in the process of applying for your documents? If YBM are willing to wait for them, then wait a little longer for the Namwon job and if they offer you a job then cancel the YBM offer. |

this is the message i sent him. (ibrahim is my boyfriend.)
"Dear Mr. Lee,
Ibrahim and I were wondering if you'd like to offer us contracts. We are wondering because we would prefer to work at your school over others, so if you'd like to offer us contracts we would end our job search immediately.
Thanks again." |

Yeah, that's what my dad said to do. The only problem I have with that is my friend is the recruiter for that particular YBM division and she helped me get that job. So I wouldn't really want to sign a contract for them then cop out. I'd feel bad. |

You have put the cart before the horse.
No-one is going to offer you a contract until you actually have your documents in hand.
If someone else comes along with documents in hand before you have yours, the job will be gone.
This is in triplicate if you are from the states (you may not have documentation until next May).
Good luck. |

| I haven't done this process since they changed it. How long does it take to get your passport back after you send in all your documents to the consulate/embassy? say i have my FBI check/apostille by mid Feb. Could I make it to Korea by March? |

Blank contract or signed by the school?
Claim what you will - NOTHING can happen till you have your documents in hand and they will pass you buy for the first person who comes along and is ready to take the job when they need someone.
But hey, what do I know.

i see what you're saying, and you're right, but the job isn't until march. so as far as they're concerned, my documents could/probably will be ready in time. i've heard of people getting their CBC back in one month, so i could get lucky.
anyway, it doesn't really matter either way because i could always find something in april. |

| I have a sneaking suspicion that the Hogwan will be not interested when they know how long it will be till you get your documents together. The public school might be willing to wait or they may not need you right away. Actually the issue is when does either school need you? If the public school doesn't need anyone untill early March, then if they like you you probably can count on the job being there when you have your documents. If the public school likes you they will be honest with you, the Hogwan forget it. You need to tell both schools the situation and then see if the Hogwan keeps contacting you, or if the public school needs you right away or if it can wait. Any sign of you not being in posession of the documents many times puts you on a recruiter or Hogwan ignore list. When you get your documents there will be other schools with teachers leaving around that time that are going to be interested in you. That's another time when you can start deciding. |

I would count on around six to eight weeks, REMEMBER you have to have the CBC apostilled. Which brings up another point; YOU did send a separate letter to the FBI along with your fingerprints and application, saying you need the CBC notarized by the FBI I hope. If you didn't call the FBI up and tell them you are faxing them a notorization request. The apostille can take a couple of weeks, or it can be done the same day if you fly to the State Department in Washington DC. |

that's what i've figured. the public school isn't a public school... it's a private school but not a hagwon. i told him i'd contact him when i receive my documents, but it if it takes longer than 7 weeks, it's probably out of the question because he said he needs someone to be there the last week in february to train.
either way it doesn't matter and i'll just find a job after i get the document. |
