America ... the new Mexico (millions trying to get out for better economic opportunities) ...
or perhaps more like the Filipino OFW (off-shore foreign worker) wave (currently ~10% of the population working off-shore to support families at home).

Is it any surprise when, for the past 10 years, media like the Wall STreet Journal, Money, etc... publish articles touting all the oppurtunities and jobs overseas? |

Yes, America is a third world country with only $1/hour jobs.
Hell, there are plenty of $4 an hour jobs in the states that Mexicans or Filipinos would love to have. Americans don't want those jobs.
I guess you could call us spoiled Filipino OFWs...until you see Americans going to the middle east to be nannies and maids, it's not much of an analogy. |

The article makes it sound like your average Joe can just pick up and leave Mayberry to work overseas at will.
Generally speaking, if you're a Westerner, to work overseas you need:
1. To be married to a local (easiest way).
2. To have a highly specialized technical skill that the foreign country is in short supply of.
3. To have your company send you overseas - but again, these are generally highly specialist technical and managerial positions. Not average Joe jobs.
4. To have A LOT of money.
5. And of course there's always ESL if you want to live in foreign country, but you still generally need a BA/BS to do that which most people don't have. |

"In-demand skills include IT, engineering and teaching."
That sounds like a pretty reasonable claim for the article to make. If Joe from Mayberry has some experience in IT or engineering, it may be relatively easy to find employment overseas. |
