|
|
What I bring to the job market
-MA in Applied Linguistics
-Two years work experience in Japan, but no work experience in Korea.
-American accent, 26 year old female (makes me sad this matters, but it does)
I am looking for a job that provides the following
-Decent salary 2.0-2.5 million won /month
-Decent vacation 10 days and all holidays
-Decent place to live (doesnt need to be a mansion, but no mold)
-Decent practices- pay on time, doesnt try to get out of paying my pension and insurance.
-Paid overtime
-Willing to live anywhere, but decent public transportation is a must as I rather not deal with the stress of driving in Korea.
Are there good English schools that are looking for candidates with more qualifications? I understand I need a year of work experience before I can find a decent university job. I worked hard to earn my MA and I am serious about teaching, do I really have to deal with all this hagwon BS?
I appreciate any advice!

You should be able to get at least what you ask for benefis wise and at last 2.3mil starting alary with your qualifications and experience.
With the right timing of your apliation a you might be able to forgo the roll of the dice tha is th hakwan and public school lottery and land either a uni / community college / international school / testprep centre job - all of which pay at least 2.2mil and give much better paid vacation than ten days. Heck even ps jobs give 21 per year. |

My advice: stay in Japan.
Because the yen is strong, more and more people in Japan want to learn English (think: an increasingly trade based economy).
The Korean won is weak (which makes for crap savings) and wages and conditions are going downhill here (and will continue going that way). |

When is best to time for applications? I will be done with classes for my MA in June, but wont have my diploma officially until August. I am willing to fly to Korea to do interviews, but I need to know that I will be able to find a job.
The won is weak, but most jobs in Japan dont offer any benefits and the market is very very saturated. Everyone and their mom wants to live in Japan. |

So you are NOT bringing your MA in linguistics.
You have a BA and 2 years in Japan.
You will get somewhere between 2.0 and 2.3 million for 120 class hours per month and if you go for a language school are unlikely to get pension or medical (in spite of what your contract may say).
You can get hagwan work year round as long as you have your apostilled degree copy and apostilled FBI check.
If you want some assurances of medical and pension then go for a public school and you have missed the deadline for EPIK positions for next March.
You may get lucky and get a PS position as a private hire to the school through a recruiter or wait for the spring and shoot for an August PS job start.

Why don't you wait until you get your MA? You'll have much better options then. |

I will have the diploma in hand in August, but wont it be too late to find a job at a University by then? As for Hagwons/etc, I would rather start earlier so I can complete a year and be able to find university work my second year. |

Umm... the academic year starts in March... Ya, August is a bit late.... even your completion in June is too late....
Uni jobs start advertizing in Nov/Dec for March starts.
It is possible but highly unlikely that you would find a uni position at the mid term (Aug/Sept start) while you are abroad. It is difficult enough when you are IN Korea and the majority of jobs require you to be here for the interview.
As to landing a hagwan job while you are waiting... you are what you are (or will be when you get here); a person with a BA and 2 years of EFL experience in Japan.
You'd be better off heading for China and finding a decent position there (lower living costs, more varied cultural experiences and potentially as much pay with similar benefits).

Have you looked at the economy right now and looked at job offers? To get a job teaching tesol at a university in Japan requires several years work experience at a university and published articles. Same goes for any job offer in the United States. I have ESL experience at a Japanese public school.
I am not sure what to do,so advice is wanted. Scolding me for accept 2.0 million won when I get benefits is NOT helpful. I heard some university jobs start in the summer?
Would Taiwan be a better option? I rather not spend tons of money to move there with flight, key money, and rent. |

Doesn't have a masters yet (and won't have completed the requirements till next summer and won't have the parchment till next fall) so won't have it when s/he wants to get to Korea.
Claiming a masters at this point would be like me asking to be called Dr. Ttompatz even though I am only ABD.

Why don't you try EPIK?
2-2.5 mil is the going rate at the moment.
As for a uni job.
You will have your documents ready for the 2013 March Semester.
No matter how you cut it that is when you will have the documents in hand.
