Get that weak stuff outta here:

Page never came close to Jimi's outrageous riffs and innovations (well really, who did?). As for Clapton, when an as-yet-unknown Hendrix took to the same stage, after the audience saw the fireworks that Jimi began to conjur up, poor Eric stormed off stage and ran away to his dressing room to sulk (he owned up to this years later in a Hendrix documentary).

The incident in question is discussed in this BBC rock documentary-

I'm late to the party but a big fan of most of what has been posted so far, though I'll take the Beatles AND the Stones over Zeppelin any day. I've nothing to add to the debate over the greatest band, but here is what it means to be a rock 'n' roll star:

The alpha and the omega.

Led zep, Beatles etc all pale in comparison to The Small Faces who were the dogs bollocks!

Brian Jones really did add a lot to the Stones sound, even though he couldn't write. It's a shame he self destructed.

At one time he was the leader of the band, or so he thought and was pressing for a greater share of the income.

Their manager told them they couldn't do covers indefinitely and had to come up with some material of their own. So the Jagger/Richards songwriting duo became the final nail in Brian's coffin.

He probably was a piece of work, albeit a talented one.

The chorus sounds extremely similar to KD Lang's 'Constant Craving'.

Stones took it and made it way way better, get over it, that's what artists do. Evil or Very Mad

I think a lot of peeps are a bit too caught up in songwriting.

That's a bit of a different ballgame. It means bringing in Dylan, but I think it's safe to say that a) does rank in terms of "rocking" b) far from stands out on any instrument or vocals. Neil Young also comes into play.

The Beatles have perhaps the greatest range of output, but they only really dally in "rocking".

The Stones competently rocked for an era.

But the Zeppelin is the ultimate conglomeration of position players.

If you were to make a hall of fame for each, it would go like this:

Lead Guitar
Hendrix
Jeff Beck
Jimmy Page
Keith Richards (or, fine, put him above Page)
Pete Townsend

Vocals
Plant
Daltrey
Dio?

Drums

Bonzo
Moon
Ginger Baker?

Bass
Claypool
Flea
John Paul?

Do John, Paul, George, or Ringo deserve higher placement?

Mick, Bill, and Charlie are all competent, but are they honestly up for greatest of all time?

The Who actually fare better here than the Beatles or the Stones.

And the Pink Floyd is best in terms of songwriting. Worthy of mention for early sampling as an innovation, but Gilmour is really the only standout instrumentalist. Mason and Wright are tight, but consider the competition. It's not about tight; it's about the next level, raising yourself to the Valhalla of rock's warriors.

Songwriting aside, who can achieve this:

?

Btw, "stairway" and "all of my love" aren't really the best examples of Zep melting faces on their way to the throne

At the end, Brian Jones was so strung out he couldn't even play an instrument. It's pretty fairly well documented that that's why he was kicked out, and he was booted. He didn't just die.

Keef didn't really come up with any blistering lead guitar solos (a la Hendrix/Page), but definitely created a ton of chugging riffs, somewhat akin to what Townsend did; when Mick Taylor was in the Stones, it seemed almost as if he were more of a rhythm guitarist keeping the songs together on stage.

So in that sense I feel like Keef/Townsend are more like in a different, song compositon-type of category.

...'course it's all good regardless Cool
