Isn't approval by immigration pretty much a given in these situations? I mean, he goes there, they're just going to say "okay, next!," aren't they? OR, if he tells them he doesn't want it/complains/etc, will they deny it? You're totally right about the law on this, but if he voluntarily goes down there, can he help himself in this situation, or is he just making it one step easier for the boss?

Approval isn't always a given, especially if the 2nd workplace isn't properly registered.

It also leaves the employer open to charges of immigration violations (as well as past employees who worked there) if there have (probably) been immigration violations.

It also protects the employee from future complications with immigration violations.

AND, if he should happen to get fired over following the law he will be in the clear, can get released from his contract and freed up to seek other employment options.

I feel you. They really have us by the #alls over here. Not too easy to just pick up, leave, buy a thousand plus dollar plane ticket back home and start over. Crying or Very sad

Indeed and this is why I wish I had, and why I advise newbs to spend the first six months here putting as much money as they can in the bank in case of incidents like this.

When I was broke I used to be so stressed and put up with so much bs from employers.

But once I had over 5mil won in the bank, I felt a lot more comfortable, less desperate and started being a lot more assertive.

Money is nice.

I will make a trip down to the immigration office to inform them about this then (am I going to need a Korean speaker to come with me?). It's funny because when I said, "isn't illegal for me to be working at two schools(regardless of being the same company)" to the boss, he laughed and said, "well, the other foreign teachers here did it and didn't complain." I really want to transfer schools and move to Seoul. If I ask for a release letter, is it going to be a big pain? Because I feel it will be. If my boss tells me that he won't and I'll have to pay some million won + fee that will be a really big problem. I really want to finish the 12 months and do the right thing, but this situation is turning into a nightmare. What to do??

It's only two hours of commuting per week - really a very small thing. You might enjoy the new location anyway. Just ask for commuting costs and an extra 75,000 won per month.

As to being legal:

It used to be that you had to register additional workplaces in advance with Immigration. This was true for any workplace, whether at a new school outside the original visa sponsor or at a school owned by the same sponsor. There was a bunch of paperwork and permission required from both schools.

The new system is that you can file all the necessary paperwork after you begin working at a new outside school (not the same employer) (IIRC you have two weeks). Approval is automatic if the paperwork is in order.

However, if you go to work for a second location for the same employer who is already your visa sponsor, Immigration no longer requires anything. You don't need any paperwork and don't have to file any documents. They don't need to add the second address to your ARC anymore - the main school address is enough. Go ahead and check, but that's the info direct from Immigration last time I checked.

(Immigration changed the rule for second locations with the same employer because it was annoying to waste time processing pages of paperwork when the employers, employees and contracts were all the same and completely redundant and approval was automatic anyway.)

The only question for the OP would be is this work allowed under his contract. Many contracts have specific terms that would either allow or disallow the addition of an extra teaching venue. If there are no specific terms, then a general review of the contract would be needed to determine if it's allowed, not allowed or subject to negotiation. It the contract allows your boss to add new locations to your work week while maintaining the other terms of the contract, then there is no breach of contract and both parties will continue to be bound by its terms.
