EDIT: OLD TOPIC! I know how GEPIK works now.
Hi again,
I sent in my GEPIK application to my recruiter several days ago with 3 preferred cities. However, I told my recruiter that I'd be fine with any city as long as it's close to Seoul. She hasn't really addressed my concern, but I was wondering if the way GEPIK works was similar to EPIK --- meaning if you don't get your 1st city of choice, you get referred to your next, and a rejection if all 3 say no to you.
I'm not quite sure how the GEPIK process works. I'm aware of how EPIK does things, but for GEPIK, I know there is much more involvement with the schools directly.
Thank you.

| If you don't get the area you want, apply through another recruiter. Wait and see. |

Is it fine to use multiple recruiters for GEPIK? I read that GEPIK and EPIK automatically reject you if you do. But do you mean that it's OK to go ahead and apply for GEPIK again with another recruiter if I don't get any offers I want? |

First, I would ignore any stupid rule that states you have to do 1 recruiter or 1 application, 1 whatever. If I am rejected because of that rule, then there are plenty other positions. I am not going to sit around and put all my eggs in one basket. You can, I won't.
Second, my understanding is that this rule only applies if you apply directly through the organizations. If you go with a recruiter and they work with the schools, then you can choose different schools, they can choose different teachers. |

Oh, I see. The thing is, the way GEPIK works confuses me. There doesn't seem to be a way to apply to GEPIK directly. Some recruiters even list the schools individually. For example: [GEPIK] Middle School in Bucheon - March 1 or something similar.
Well, I've been searching the forums and one poster claimed that GEPIK doesn't really take your preferences into account, and instead will throw any position at you. I also read that schools are able to see your resume, and that they'll contact you if interested.
Could someone with experience with GEPIK help me out? I just don't want my options limited to the 3 cities I listed on my app. |

I worked at a GEPIK school in 2008-2009. I was offered multiple GEPIK positions and picked one. I wasn't placed blindly.
Instead of asking us, you should really be talking to recruiters. They are the ones who will know the latest. Just tell a recruiter you applied through GEPIK with another recruiter but they didn't have any good offers. See what they say. They won't help you further if there is a problem. |

Oh, I see. I've actually asked my recruiter a few days ago, but haven't heard back. I e-mailed her again earlier as well. Just to be sure, were you offered the positions from one recruiter? Or multiple? Thanks again. |

I went through worknplay and I also talked with other recruiters like Appletree based in Colorado, USA.
Those two specifically offered me several GEPIK jobs. Incheon was also an option, so possibly EPIK jobs were offered in that mix, but I never considered anything south or east of Gyeonggido. |

Hi. Gepik does not have a central hiring system like EPIK, where you apply, do your interview and if passed, theyll send your docs to the office of education in the cities that you want.
In GEPIK, it is up to each individual schools to find and hire their own teachers, therefore you will see ads for individual schools. Recruiters will throw any jobs they have at you. If you agreed, they will send your resume to the school. If the school likes waht they see, the'll ask for an interview.
If you are picky on locations, it might be a while before you get what you want. hope that clears things up. |

Oh, I see. So basically, the 3 cities that I listed for my preferences don't matter that much? If that's the case, that's good. At this point, I'm willing to work in any city in Gyeonggi-do as long as it's not more than 2 hours away from Seoul... or maybe this is still too picky?
And sorry to ask again, but I just wanted to be sure... Does this mean that each recruiter works with specific schools? For example, Recruiter A might be working with 5 GEPIK schools, while Recruiter B is working with 6 other GEPIK schools. Or am I completely wrong? If this is true, then does the 1 recruiter rule not apply here? (Not that I don't trust koreatimes --- It's just that I've heard otherwise so many times before).
Many thanks. |

I don't know how many times you want us to answer you the same question asked different ways.
Stop worrying. Wait and see what the recruiters have.
I recommend looking for a school 45 minutes away from Seoul. Personally, I prefer south or east of Seoul. If you go north to Uijeongbu or Ilsan, it's fine, but you will be further away from the southern parts of Korea if you ever want to visit them. This can easily add 1 hour of travel time. |

I just read this on another thread -
| Quote: |
| I believe it is Korvia that does the majority of recruiting for GEPIK schools, but there are many recruiters out there who have jobs that Korvia may not. It is okay to work with multiple recruiters on this, but make sure that when you actually send in an application, you only do it through ONE recruiter--as already mentioned, that will be an instant rejection. |
I have already sent in my GEPIK application to one of my recruiters (ATC). Can I ask my other recruiter (Korvia) to help me and mention this fact? |

The general rule of thumb is that if you are applying through the organization (GEPIK or EPIK) then use one recruiter. But if you're applying to individual schools, you can use as many recruiters as you want.
If you're going to use more than one recruiter, don't tell them that's what you are doing as it reduces their incentive to work with you.
As for GEPIK, I was with them July 2009 - 2011. I used one recruiter and he sent me information on individual schools. I have no recollection of giving my top three preferences on the application.
I left my school because (...well, for a few reasons, but ultimately) my school lost its funding from the provincial office and GEPIK had been all but cut entirely.
As I understand it now, the only schools (in Gyeonggi-do) that still hire foreign teachers are those that have funding from the cities (and are/were not dependent on funding from the provincial office of education).
In short, you're applying for a program that has been virtually obliterated. Being picky about being near Seoul isn't helping your cause. And besides, Gyeonggi is the province that surrounds Seoul. Compared to EPIK, anywhere you're placed will be relatively close to Seoul.
I'd wanted to be as close to Seoul as possible (back in 2009 before GEPIK was cut) and it still took a few months to get placed in a school.
Anyway, one more thing about your multiple recruiter question, you could ask your recruiter if s/he's placing you with individual schools or through GEPIK itself, but they may figure out what you're really asking.
Or you could wait and see what the recruiter offers you. If they offer individual schools, then that probably answers your question. |

Hmmm. My recruiter made it sound like you create a Video Introduction of yourself, and then they send it to various schools by you location preference or what schools contact them saying that they need teachers, and those schools pick if they want you or not.
Youtube "GEPIK introduction" or "GEPIK interview" and you'll find people's videos there. |
