You are correct. I have no idea about jobs and contracts in Korea.

Best of luck in your search.

.

As usual, you misinterpret what I say.

Ttompatz is absolutely correct. Most hagwons will not pay pension or medical.
My first hagwon stated in the contract that they would pay for both pension and medical, but they never did. When I got sick, my boss got nervous... offered to take me to the hospital, was really cool... but never signed me up for medical... this is the norm.

I applied to 4 universities this fall and I was asked to interview at 3 of them. I don't have an MA, but I'll have one finished by next May. However, I'm currently in the country, have four years of Korean experience and a solid application package.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Personally, I'd love a chance to live in China or Taiwan.

Thanks for the advice Patrick. I especially appreciate the lack of attitude.
Do you really think all hagwon jobs will suss me out of insurance and pension as tt said? I agree they wont take me seriously until I have my MA, but no pension and insurance seems a little excessively pessimistic.

I may go on to get a Phd in the states, though I have seen a lot of good jobs that only want an MA and publications. Given that so many students from Korea are studying English in the United States that can only help me as well.

Ttom is bang on about the tax rate and pension\healthcare issue which simply means you need to carefully read your contract and make sure about your status with the school.

Personally I think you can do quite well with a Hakwon that will provide healthcare and pension.

As for applying with Universties without a MA in hand take note of this:

If you apply to Universities from abroad without a MA in hand and solid experience that can be referenced your odds are very low. Better idea (like you said earlier) to acquire in-country experience and apply from within Korenext hiring phase (November-Feb 2012-2013). As for the Hakwon you pick: focus on adult hakwons or Unigowns as that experience will be worth more than working at a hakwon that teaches kids.

Good luck

Do you know of any good unihakwons? My only issue with adult students is the split shifts which sound like a total killer for anyone.

I worked at SNU, got the job applying from abroad when I was only 24, so it's definitely possible. 2.7m plus housing, hours were pretty good, 16 contracted per week plus overtime if you wanted. I worked two evenings per week one term but besides that no split shifts. About 4 months paid vacation, which is typical of most "unigwons." Never had any real issues with the administration, and the students were generally pretty easy to get along with (more or less my age, which helped). Yonsei/Ewha would probably be similar, and I hear Hongdae has very good positions. Your best bet would be to email a bunch of university language centers directly.

What year was this? Things have changed. Universities no longer hire from abroad (for the most part) unless you have a PhD. Also, unigwon vacations have declined significantly. Many offer two weeks of vacation per year. That's quite typical, actually.

I think the only way you're gonna find out is by actually applying for jobs rather than asking on this forum whether people (probably half of whom have never worked at a uni) think you have a chance. Go through the ad descriptions and apply for something that fits your criteria.

I also wouldn't disrespect the advice of Ttompatz. He has helped a lot of people on this board and knows what he's talking about. Ttompatz rocks!

tt knows a lot, but he was also being intentionally combative and misstating what I said. He was trolling me a bit and I called him on it. Longtermers tend to be that way. But the internet is srs business, right?

No he wasn't and no he didn't AND if your resume with false claims of a completed MA when in fact it won't be done for almost another academic year had crossed my desk (as one who does have a final say in hiring at 2 POEs) it would have been binned without further ado.

You are what you are and not what you may become at some future time.

Keep it simple, stick to the facts and apply when you are ready.

Will you get a job = yes.

Will you get your dream job = unlikely, especially not sitting in your room back in Decatur.

Good jobs mean networking; boots on the ground and proving yourself a capable person in the classroom and 2 years of JET don't really cut it anywhere except China (where they are so desperate for native speakers that they will take anyone).

All that said, if you don't like my opinion you are more than welcome to borrow my rose colored glasses and see what you want.

I, or someone just like me, will still be at the desk at the foreigner help center when things aren't the way you hoped and they have gone all pear shaped on you and you need help to get out of the mess.

again, dude, chill out. I wish you the best in Korea or abroad and I appreciate any non-trolling input. I said from like the third post that I didnt have the ma yet. I would tell any place I was applying to that the degree had not been given to me until August. I finish the curriculum in June and will have the degree printed out and all that in August I dont lie when I look for jobs. Shocked Quit looking for me to be this evil employee or something- Im not. I appreciate the information you have given me, I dont appreciate you being so damn snotty about it.

And looking up my location and mentioning it online is completely inappropriate. No wonder people bow down to you on this forum. I think I rather have someone else help me.

No one will help you after this. Good luck on your own. Very disrespectful.

2008. They hired three of us that year, all from abroad. Perhaps they were trying to "mix things up" a bit, or they have a different hiring philosophy. For most universities, being in the country is a definite advantage, but it's not a deal-breaker not to be.

And as recent as last year, I know instructors got 18 weeks paid vacation (in fact, it went up two weeks). I can't see them or any of the other better known places cutting that significantly.

ttom's tone has been nothing but mild-mannered, you're being overly defensive.

Why don't you apply for jobs on this board and see what happens. But write down
BA 200x
MA 2012 expected.

When I post on I want to be slightly amused and when I read it, it is for advice..... You should listen to ttom because his input is usually the most valuable, so if he thinks you probably need to wait for a MA before you apply for a uni job he is probably right, but he does not have a crystal ball. You might think he is being snooty but he is using language that is simple and he didn't sugar coat it, it is what it is.
