Don't like the way the construction companies and city planners operate in that case, they tend to raise older neighborhoods to the ground too fast and expel people in the process. Happened just behind my in-laws place. |

Don't like the way the construction companies and city planners operate in that case, they tend to raise older neighborhoods to the ground too fast and expel people in the process. Happened just behind my in-laws place. |

Construction companies and city planners do this in lots of other countries. Why are you picking on Korea? Also your one anecdotal piece of evidence means nothing. I've been here for 9 years and I know loads of Korean construction companies that don't do this. But I suppose this is typical of the Korea bashers that tend to congregate on Dave's. |

Sure they do that in lots of countries and you know what, in some of the places I have been it is far worse and damaging to people and the environment. However, you asked about KOREA...how odd is it that I would respond with a KOREA-centric example! Good lord, thats astounding.

Spell check on an online discussion board where I post casually, nawwww, I DO NOT CARE about the overal quality of writing here.
Hope that was clear enough for you now. I do not come here looking for flawless writing but hey, it irks some people to no end to see spelling mistakes on an online discussion board.
Spell check for formal writing...sure. For here who cares.
My advice: steer well clear of twitter as it will drive you insane as you try to hand out spelling mistake tickets to all the tweeters out there.

I would not say Americans tend to, Canadians tend to, French tend to either...so I sure will not say Koreans tend to unless thats QUALIFIED with something that adds perspective and limits the scope.

Traffic in the larger cities
Tendency to tear down neighborhoods to build up new ones too fast
Deep summer heat (late July-August)
Aggressive driving by some (even if I can UNDERTSTAND why it happens)
Over study for some kids
Squat toilets (those are fewer than they were however)
Thats just a short list of course...and I have one just as long for most of the places I have lived in or visited.
Now, what I will not do is take my experiences and paint all Koreans with the same brush because it makes for a big bang of a statement. I can also accept that many of my initial impressions of Korea were flat out wrong and borne of my own ignorance and limited perspective (the ole expat experience I spoke of before). I also never (in my life) take a few bad experiences and blow those out of proportion pretending they are general conclusions or trends.
Finally, and I stated this numerous times here, I like to try and understand why things happen a certain way or people behave a certain way and also where behaviors and patterns come from BEFORE I try and draw a conclusion from it. I would no more blindly accept the story of one recruiter about someone he placed than the story of one teacher about a bad school without in each case trying to get some sort of supporting evidence or facts.
I doubt however all of this will satisfy you Ed... |
Homer aka Patrick has been on Daves ESL Cafe since last century. His mantra has been "just because it happened to you doesn't mean its the norm in Korea" Well here we are Homer, 2011 , and newbie posters are still relaying the same woeful tales of ripoffs and scams perpetrated by their Korean employers. There have been thousands of these stories through the years and they are still going strong. Is homer and his ilk ready to concede that their is something inherently shady about Korean business practices? |
