First of all, I'm sorry to add to the madness of the E-2 visa postings. I browsed a few pages and didn't see this question, although surely it's out there, it's just the search function on this website is utterly useless.

I am just renewing my contract. I did this last year also, and I did it before my visa expired so I was able to do so without a FBI check. Is it possible to do again this year? Has anyone renewed and not need an FBI check or lots of paperwork?

Thank you

If they do NOT have one on file you will need one (beginning Jan 1, 2012) or your application will be denied.

The requirement for a national (as compared to state) check was made in 2010. 2011 WAS the grace year (yup, you had a whole year to get your FBI check done and get it down to immigration) for our American friends to get into compliance with a national (FBI) check.

If you failed to get it during that year you may have problems come the new year and might have an extended vacation while you wait for it.
