Winter here, and I am cold. How much will running my ondol cost me? I'm in a 10 pyeong apartment. Would it be more cost efficient to just get an electric blanket? About how much will that raise my electricity bill? Thanks!

10 pyeong!!!

You can run the ondol nice and hot and shouldn't have to pay more than maybe 70,000 pm. Probably less. Well worth it.

Electric blankets are good for when you sleeping, but when you wake up, get out of bed, and step on the cold, concrete floor you are gonna wish you used the ondol instead.

Don't be a tight arse - it won't cost that much. Just switch on the gas. You can always turn it off when you are at work. I guess you are one of those people that takes water home from school, lol.

Do you need to live like a poor person? You can't afford about 50,000 per month for proper heating?

Electric blankets come in all styles and prices. They don't cost much to run, but they have a bad reputation for safety and anyway, what a miserable way to get through the Winter......huddling under an electric blanket in a freezing cold apt.....

I recommend using the ondol enough that you don't die. Cover the windows with plastic and crank that baby up to 17. Then use the electric blanket, space heater, layers of sweaters, big pile of blankets and/or microwave beanbag to get comfortable.

I used to have an electric blanket but it wasn't my favorite thing. I didn't use it much and sold it on Craigslist about a month ago for 5000. (2000 less than I paid!) I like the microwave beanbag for sleeping and the space heater for using the computer.

Go with both. I have a heated mattress thing that goes on top of my bed which I have named "Hot Bed" which is fantastic. Bought it for 20,000W in the Dongdaeumun subway station. Best thing ever. Electricty bill shows no sign of noticeable increase. Run the ondol too. You are making money. No need to suffer. A nice warm aparment makes for a happy and healthy person.

I have a 20k heating mattress also. But have been reading up about EMFs and cancer and it has scared me crapless, so only use it on max to heat-up the bed and then unplug it before getting in. The poster 'shifty - I think it was' has either trolled me into not using a great moneysaver or has possibly saved my health...

I'm not using my ondol at the moment. Get home and watch tv wearing a vest and fleece. Fleeces really are excellent and cheap.

Then I got to bed after a hot shower and with the bed pre-heated and wearing a t-shirt and the fleece and I'm plenty warm.

You can call me cheap for saving 80k a month, sure. But in 6 months, that's my winter vacation flight paid for, so bully for me.

Officetels are the worst as they divide up the electric bill and average it out. That means if you use less then you might pay more in the long run.

I've got a space radiator that stands about 1m high. Keeps my room toasty and even has an automatic timer feature that turns on automatically. You can get these at any electronic stores - HiMart, etc. and they run from 100,000 on up. I've seen one model go for 400,000. I haven't got a full electric bill yet since using so I'm not sure how much I'm saving.

Why must you automatically assume I'm being stingy with my money? People are so quick to get snippy over any little thing on these forums. I'm just asking about costs, because I don't want any surprises when I get my gas or electric bills.

Pretty good information there. There are so many different out there.

Go out and look. 70,000 might be a ballpark figure.

There are also heating mats which you can put on your bed and floor style ones too that are comfy.

It's the nature of this forum to give personal perspectives on topics found. Don't think we're being snippy. Having a bad day?

If you use your ondol, make sure you don't open the valves completely. Just turn half way and you will find your gas bills lower.

Come on. Someone posts about not turning on their heat in the winter, and you're surprised that ppl might think ya stingy??

Ok then, if this really is purely for scientific purposes, how would anyone else be able to help you out. Only YOU can know the exact costs associated with heating your place for the winter.

Last winter I would turn my ondol on from 5 pm to 11pm. My apartment never got over 18 degrees but my gas bill hit 130000 won! It's 6-7000 in the summer.

This year I bought a little box fan heater for 30k won from the local DC Mart and I run that full blast. My apartment gets up to 23 degrees now. My electric bill? 26,000 won (usually 11-12000).

That's my experience. I think ondols are absolutely worthless and cost an absurd amount of money (and I've used them in 3 different apartments, all expensive with my current apartment the most expensive).

In one month I've saved 100000 won in utilities and I'll save that for another 2-3 months. Definitely worth it in my opinion.
