The world's a pretty messed up place; it messes good people up.
Deal with it. Make a difference if you can.
I usually feel like when I have a good look into another person's eyes, I find something decent...I have noticed 'tho that people involved in (higher stakes) commerce tend to feel threatened, or at least don't really open up and talk to others with a feeling of parity unless they sense some opportunity to make a buck. May be the nature of the game, but I don't need the game. |

One experience I've had: riding on a bus in San Francisco. Dude sitting across from me stares at me hard. I try to ignore him. "What the f are you doing on this bus? You see any other crackers on this bus? Just brown skinned people on here. Get the f off this bus you white devil." He then gets up and encourages me even more to get off. Does anyone else do anything? No. I don't blame them since I think he was on something. I quickly decided to heed his advice.
My (white) friend went to a public school where whites were a minority. He can go on all night telling stories about being called a cracker and going through all kinds of shit.
Where in California do you live? Where there is a white majority? There are definitely certain areas will a white person might face some hostility.
Just to make it clear: I'm not saying us whities encounter racism as much as any other group out there, just saying it DOES happen in California (and other places such as my current home, DC). |
That first story sounds pretty farfetched or you were just VERY unlucky because, honestly, how often do you think that really happens... It is a funny story though lol.
... |
It's an odd story and the offender was high maybe, but a person getting harassed due to their race and pressured to get off a bus isn't exactly an "LOL" moment. If anything, it's a WTF moment. Switch the races; is it still "LOL"? |
Firstly, I assure you that story is true. It's the only time I've experienced it and the one time in my life I've been called a white devil- it was surreal. I think I was even more shocked because it was in San Francisco, a city of enlightenment! I certainly wasn't trying to imply it is frequent, just had to tell the story to counter the claim that white people don't face racism in California. A WTF moment is a perfect way to describe it.
Secondly, I think Ibsen wasn't saying the event itself was funny, just how absurd and crazy it was. |

Firstly, I'm with you.try going to a mostly latino school in Escondido, California. you'll either have to fight or do some smooth talking or just downright ignore taunts/BS. My Mexican girlfriend told me she hated white people until she met me, but all her friends and family still did. Gotta admire the openness of it I guess.
Secondly, he called the story farfetched, funny, and lol. so I'll take those words for what they actually mean. Maybe some tend to discount racism against whites as funny or that we all just deserve it somehow, but if you flip the script and put a non-white in the same situation, you can see it's not very funny at all. That is, if you think all people are equal and deserve the same amount of respect. Some groups experience racism more than others, but no group is immune to it. |

It's a shame that it's delicious.
But I don't know anyone (except conservatives) who claim racism is dead in the US. |
It's not conservatives that are promoting racism. You can't even critize Obama without it being called racism. This guy is dividing the USA along racial lines. |

Several folks have sent this my way... If you need more reason not to like Chik Fil-A, check out this Tumblr post about some UC Irvine students' -- who happen to be Asian -- recent visit to the fast food chain.
Take a good look at those receipts. The cashier did not ask for their names when she (I'm assuming "Lia" is a woman) took their orders, but apparently took it upon herself to provide these Asian customers with names of her own invention:
So my friend is an RA here at UC Irvine and he went to Chik Fil-A with his residents. The cashier did NOT ask for their names, but when they got their receipts, this is what they said. If you know anything about UCI, you probably know that we have a reputation as being an Asian-dominant school. Fifty-three percent, actually. And while the victims of this act are indeed Asian, it shouldnt matter. The fact that ignorant language like this is used to describe people is UNACCEPTABLE.

Yeah, that damned Obama. America had such a long history of racial harmony until he came and invented racism.
It's not Obama's fault that some insecure white people can't come to grips with having a Hawaiian-born (Hawaii might as well be Japan) "anti-colonialist" (aka doesn't think that white people did Africans a favor by enslaving them) black guy who was born to a race-traitor of a white mother (who not only married a black guy but also an Asian guy) as president.
Deal with it. |

He's doing it is he? By being both black and president? The nerve of the guy! |

Victims? You'd think they'd lost their property or were physically attacked. They got called names.
Let's keep this in perspective. It was an ignorant and juvenile taunt, and beneath someone who probably makes a living wage. But the way this blog discusses the incident you'd think it was a grave civil rights violation. |

1. Yes it is. In fact they do it to white people, arabs and Jews also. People keep picking on the jews and it's not on, so please don't try and just brush it under the rug.
2. Even if it wasn't common in the west, would that magically make it okay for them to do it in Asia? Please do explain your watertight logic on this one! |

Well, having lived in Canada and visited the US with my "Asian" family, I can't recall this being a big thing.
Are you honestly saying that I could walk through any major US city and see Asians spitting when they see dark skinned people? Or, according to you, when they see whites or arabs or Jews?
I call BS on this. Yeah, sure, there's going to be a certain amount of racism in every section of society, but I don't think this is nearly as prevalent as you're making it out to be.
Chances are, you're just miffed at me from the other thread, and now decided to amble on in here. lol
As for my "watertight" logic... I'm going to let you stew on that one for a minute. I'll play my card as soon as you actually make any sense. |

Shoulda known his place. Or at least if he could've balanced it out by throwing other minorities, like Latinos and Muslims, under the bus a la Herman Cain. |

That sucks. Some people think life is like a Southpark episode where they can just throw insults around like it's nothing. |
