Tensions between Beijing and Seoul ratcheted up a notch this week after a South Korean coast guardsman was stabbed aboard a Chinese fishing vessel in South Korean waters. Two South Korean coastguard ships were called to the vessel, which was suspected of fishing illegally in South Korean waters near the border with North Korea. The captain of the assault squad tasked with boarding the ship, Cpl. Lee Cheong-ho, was stabbed while aboard the Chinese vessel. Apparently, the captain of the ship was pretty fired up. It is claimed that he broke a window in the wheel house, grabbed a shard of glass, and stabbed Lee and another sailor. Lee was taken to Incheon, where he later died from his injuries. The other sailor, Lee Nak-hoon is in stable condition and being treated for the injuries he received during the melee. |
Full coverage and analysis, as well as pictures of all the debauchery are available over at the blog.

I doubt there will be any long-term repercussions from this, besides a few netizen flame wars and cheap theatrics in front of embassies.
Interesting stuff, nonetheless. Thanks for the photos. |

Bottom line: Nobody wants to see an over-militarized South Korea. |

Where are ya getting that from?
The ROK has to protect its interests... and a Military is one way of doing that.
Here, I'll throw out the opposite statement for you to chew on

Does it really have to be like this when the growing number of young South Korean citizens are against military affairs?
I'm a Canadian gyopo in my 20s and even I don't like the image of Gukga Anbo (national security in Korea) just like the majority of the 20s here.
Then again, I attend a Presbyterian-affiliated peace church with an Australian-educated pastor in Seoul. It's full of borderline hippies in there! |

Militarised SK.
Niether China or the US would allow them to go to war with anyone by themselves. They want to get fiesty with China, Obama steps in throws a financial bone and it all dies down. |

Asians don't exercise quotas or legal fishing limits. They take everything from the sea, including even undersized and immature fish.
So then it is no surprise that both Japan and China have completely exhausted their own fish stocks...and are raiding foreign waters to steal fish from other people.
Korea should do what Somalia does. Hold trespassing fishing vessels hostage. |

By all means - change the world then.
Perhaps you could hold hands with everyone and no one will ever have beef with the ROK.
Good luck with that. |

Because the majority of the world is conditioned to hate North Korea without critically questioning it. |

No, I critically question North Korea and its system. But perhaps you don't. Perhaps you think it's a fine place to be.
Tell ya what, I'm willing to bet 100,000won that you wouldn't live there.
As a Canadian, you could apply to teach there. Or heck, you could ever defect.
Feel like moving? |
